Hunting & Fishing Preparations for Waterfowl Season

About a month ago we took full advantage of the lowered lake levels and did some planting.
The exposed mud flats were sewn with Japanese wild millet and milo.
Getting to them was bad enough, but walking in mud that sinks you up to the knees can be a real challenge.
Perhaps snow shoes would help?

Not a big fan of summer. Can you tell?

Then it was on to the next project - the boat makeover.
While this boat has served me well for four seasons now, I've been making a list of improvements in the back of my mind.

The previous owner had installed 1" marine plywood decking to all of the floor surfaces. Additionally, he had cut back the factory decking on the front end to make room for more stuff and people.
In doing so, he compromised the structural integrity of the front deck. He compensated with 2x4's and 2x2's.
He actually did a nice job.
The fellow had some carpentry skills.

My problem with the plywood was that it was HEAVY and it provided a space in which all manner of stuff could get trapped.

So it needed to go!

I ripped out the old plywood, carpet, and trapped dirt and debris. I didn't find anything living in there, much to my amazement.

As you can see from the above photos, the grab bar, seat, lights, and other fixtures were mounted to the plywood.
With the plywood gone, some changes had to made to accommodate the re-installation of the fixtures.

Luckily, I share office space with a welding and machine shop.
With a plan on my mind, I laid out what I wanted done.
The guys squeezed me in, even though they were in the midst of a 7 day a week rush to get caught up on bigger and higher paying jobs.

The front decking was braced and mounts for the seat and grab bar were welded in place.
A skilled aluminum welder is a wonder to just sit and watch.

I made a shim for the front light from a piece of cheap cutting board from Wal-Mart. The hole in the factory decking was way too big, so the cutting board shim made for a better fit.

Yesterday, I stripped out all of the old wiring and installed all new wiring and switches for lights and bilge.
Previously, there was a single three position switch mounted in the corner of the stern. It was pain in the but to get to.
I installed toggles on a plate that I had the guys weld to my grab bar.

Since the exposed bottom of the boat was subject to be slippery when wet, I cleaned it all up and rolled on truck bed liner, then sprayed my camo on top.
I added the box as a middle seat and for extra storage.

The decoy bags were custom made a few years ago, and they went back in this afternoon.

She's all set to go out for the goose opener tomorrow!
I just need to fill my spray bottle and remember to take it with me.

Re: Preparations for Waterfowl Season

Thanks.
Now if I can just make that insatiable itch for the new Browning Maxus go away and leave me alone.

Re: Preparations for Waterfowl Season

I've heard from a few who have it and they all seem to like it.
My biggest issue with it is that there's no 3.5" option yet.
I heard that will be taken care of next year.

I've got a 2004 SBEII, but that damned Maxus is sweet!

Re: Preparations for Waterfowl Season

Ive got an SBEII that I never friggin shoot. Over the course of my DU Banquet career, Ive won that SBEII, a Browning Gold Hunter, two 870 Super Mags. All 4 of em are sitting unfired in the case. Now, my old BPS has been shot to shit.

DUDE!!!! I just watched those guys folding a shit ton of snows with that Maxus on the Browning site.

That is a pretty friggin cool shotgun.

Whats the deal with the "power drive system" that is in it?

Re: Preparations for Waterfowl Season

Rock on brother, love to hear your planting the Jap. Heard we get a Cando a piece this year! Good job on the boat. As for the new Benelli, I held one, good sight picture but not sure how easy it would be to dissasemble after a good pluff mudd bath. I am staying with the II . Count down is on,,14 days and the Blue Wingers are gonna suffer, counted roughly over a thousand in one of our flyways this past weekend! Fukn gators means dog stays, breaks my heart, but damn near lost him to one three yrs ago. I fkn hate dem bitches.

Re: Preparations for Waterfowl Season

Looks like a nice piece of work Tucker.

How long is the water fowl season? Never done it myself but always assumed it coincided with the southerly migration. Does it start this soon?

Guess I've been away from the frosty north too long to remember when I began to see the flocks heading south.

Good hunting.

Re: Preparations for Waterfowl Season

Elmer better be careful playing with them there guns.

He could shoot himself as he wishes for me.

Got this in a message from him... I just had to share. I love it.

The early goose season is designed to reduce resident (non-migratory) Canada Goose populations. They eat golf courses, crops, and lawns, and leave a wake of shit and destruction.

Otherwise, different species migrate at different times, and we have to deal with other resident varieties.

We'll have a month of goose season.
Then we get three days of early duck season in October.
Mostly, that's for Wood Ducks and local mallards.

In November, we start getting migrating geese and ducks, and additional seasons are set for them until the end of February, when we close out with more goose shooting.

VA is divided into various population zones, with each zone having its own unique rules and regulations for species and bag limits.
It can get complicated.

Oh Elmer, you could'nt ignore anyone. You're just too nosey and love sticking it where it doesn't belong. But if you did, it would be an honor.

And another thing, what do you do, ground swat them critters? They look tame. And is that your partner John Kerry doing another photo op for an upcoming election?

Oh, and why don't you post a photo of the Bamster Bridge? I'm sure lot's of folks here would love to see your living quarters.

Re: Preparations for Waterfowl Season

Next to burning powder in my rifle I love waterfowl hunting. When my son turned 12 a few years back we got into duck and goose hunting. Man what a great time, hunting and spending time with my son and friends.

We are into the early season here also, my boy shot his first banded goose, he got a banded duck 2 years ago. here are some photos of this year and years past:

Re: Preparations for Waterfowl Season

Great pix guys.

Here's a few areas I've been working on. A bumper crop of smartweed.

Smartweed, nutsedge, and sesbania. This'll be a mallard magnet if I can manage disturbance on this unit.

More smartweed in a ridge and swale oxbow.

I'll be turning the water on in about a month...unless mother earth can give me 7" like we got this weekend when I want it.

Re: Preparations for Waterfowl Season

Nice job on the plantings and the bands!

We've got one old honker that gets here around the last two weeks of the season every year. He's sporting a collar and a leg band, and I have yet to get under him for a shot.
Been after him for three years now.
He haunts me and taunts in my dreams.

I had him in the crosshairs of my 22-250 last year after the season was out. I just couldn't do it. Too much respect for the old boy to treat him that way.
