Quick PSA that may have already been covered, but I thought I'd post to ensure mutual learning. Posting this fuck-up of mine with a brand new Short Dot CC. Was shooting this weekend at 1k, was primarily running 6.5cm bolt guns, but I brought a precision gas gun I recently topped off with a new short dot.

Just to temp fate, and "waste" money, I thought I'd try the 5.56 @ 1k with the new short dot. I had dope dialed in for 77smks at 100yd, but I had not yet actually zero'ed the elevation turret. So, being the neanderthal I am, after being on the firing line for most of the morning, I decided to zero the short dot to "zero". I loosened the set screws in the elevation turret, pulled up to unlock in prep to turn it to zero, and the entire fucking elevation cap came off the scope.

#FML. I was able to put it back on, but lost the ability to actually move the erector, and no tactile clicks. I finger fucked it a bit more but reached my comfort level, and decided to stop and call S&B in the morning.

I called S&B American this morning, gave them the run down, and they absolutely concurred to get it to them. I live in Northern Virginia and they are about 60 mins from me, and they offered to turn it around same day if I came in. So, the timing was perfect, and I drove to their site, dropped off the scope, ate some amazing BBQ at their recommendation, picked it up 45 mins later all fixed. Fucking WIN.

The root cause was, for some reason, the third set screw wasn't "capped/blocked", as demonstrated by my corrected scope below. All three set screws were allen screws, so I just went for all three like a fucktard on the firing line sunday. So they capped the third set screw on both elevation and windage, double checked everything, and good to go. I felt like a real asshole as I have S&B Ultra Short, but the third screw is a flat head which mentally triggers you not to try to unscrew it, and you naturally just loosen the allen heads.

Randy and team at S&B America are awesome, huge shout out to them.

Can we learn that S&B isn't perfect and they need to make their turrets more idiot proof for the average user (well, me. I would be that idiot).

I commend the service. But why not make it so I can't screw it up?

I empathize with your question. Ultimately, big boyz rule apply, I should have brought forward my experience with the ultra short I have, to working with this scope.

But I agree with the intent of your quest, Randy and Jerry were surprised that one of the three screws weren't capped/blocked from the factory. Maybe the short dots aren't coming that way, maybe they forgot to cap mine, maybe my caps fell out? Hard to say.
