What is the purpose of having a muzzle brake on a 223 or 260 when the guns weighs 14+lbs?

I have shot my buddies 260 weighing in at 12lbs and can follow the shot to the target and I cannot imagine having much fatigue in a day of shooting.

Just wondering what the purpose would be?

Technique is only a small part of it.

While proper technique helps see huts it is not a fix all.

Muzzle brakes on small calibers are for seeing impacts usually and some recoil reduction.

While good technique with a 260 and a 10x scope might help you to see impacts . Technique will only get you so far as magnification goes up.(say 25-42x scopes)

so brakes have a place on small calibers.

Heck Im getting one installed on my 6Dasher with a 30 inch barrel. Mainly because Leonard Baity highly reccomended it. That and I'll try talking shootone into going and shooting a few prariedogs in the near future;)

I'm getting a brake installed on my 22LR since it has so much recoil that it's detaching my retina after about 75 rounds in a day. One of my instructors told me that they usually only allow 100-125 days max or the students can get a concussion from the massive blast.

I have shot my 260 with my Tubb brake on, with it off, and with a suppressor on it. The recoil impulse and amount of recoil is different for all 3. Obviously, the muzzle brake has the least amount of recoil. And the recoil is a quick snap, and does not take me off target. Without the brake, there is more recoil, and it takes me further off target, but I am able to get back on target just the same. The increased time not being on target without the brake is why I prefer a brake. The suppressor is nice and quiet, but it recoils more and is a longer shove and takes me the most off target. When you weigh all the options, a muzzle brake helps reduce recoil, and allows you to get back on target faster.

If you shoot on a square range, a brake is probably unnecessary. If you shoot competitively, where you are under some form of "duress" or at an odd position behind the rifle, a brake sure is handy for follow up shots.

recoil reduction AND it's very snipery. The PWS brake on my .308 works amazingly well for prone shooting, its like night and day with the amount of dust kick up from a non braked gun fer prone shootin. 90% of my LR shootin is from a field where I plop on the ground where it gets annoying being dusted out, not form a covered sweet bench

.....And if you have one of the 360 degree breaks like the one the smith built for mine, You can throw rocks at your neighbor when practicing for a match...lmao

On a .223 I like a brake so that when I am shooting ground squirrels I can see my hits . I am kind of a sick fucker I guess because I like to see the carnage .

I also have several friends who use a brake as a thread protector when they are not running a suppressor . Often times its cheaper than having a thread protector made and offers an actual function while firing the weapon .

I've often wondered if breaks help increase muzzle velocity. I have shot my 308 with and without the break, with the break my rifle groups higher than without. I have yet to test this over my chrono, but it has made me curious.

the velocity boost thingie only appears whilst using a suppressor

I've been using a Surefire brake on my .223. It does help to make up for bad form when I'm shooting from a concrete bench with a bipod. Really, the only reason that I have it is because my rifle came with it installed.

I'm thinking of taking it off due to the blast/noise.

!!! I also have a DPMS 6.5 creedmoor that has the JP Recoil Eliminator brake...It doesn't throw shit like the 360 degree brake on the rifle in the picture, but it is a loud bitch...people generally try to get as far away from me as possible durring matches. My new bolt gun is a heavy barreled (and when I say heavy barreled I mean 1.250" straight contoured 28" barrel) 6.5 creedmoor, I do not have a brake on that heavy pig, although in the last match I was having difficulty spotting impacts. I am going to try a different bipod, I am currently running a Harris and I am thinking about switching to an atlas, when I try to "load up" my bi-pod it just slides forward, I would like something a little more aggressive, so I can load the bipod more.

all you guys with muzzle brakes should be stuck together at matches! That way you can throw rocks at each other and leave us "un-muzzled" shooters to concentrate on our targets.
