So my Germany rotation here is coming to an end. It's been interesting rotation here in Germany. I've seen a lot of different countries and sights and historical places from the "Eagles Nest" to auswitz to Bastogne and even Normandy.

Now to business, when I left home my 6CM barrel for my RPR was pretty much shot out, 1800ish rounds down the pipe. I just ordered a barrel from Patriot Valley Arms. I decided on these guys due to all the positive reviews and the talk here on snipershide. I ordered it in 7-08. Tired of the barrel burner rounds and want to shoot some high BC 7mm projectiles. I have a range within 10 minutes of my house with the ability to shoot to 1000 yards. I can't wait to actually shoot this barrel once I get home in January next year. I will have to do a range report on this once I get it all together and start load development.

Welcome home! Thanks for standing on that line - and it remains a very dangerous one, given crazy Putin and some wimps in NATO.

Get some good brass for that 708, don't shoot cheap bullets in it, and you will have lots of hits with a lot more energy on target. PVA does a great job at delivering barrels that shoot bugholes w/o any load development.

What brass and what range bullets should I use. Should i use lower weight bullets or heavy for the longer distance?

On brass, I would either (1) buy Lapua 308 Small Rifle Primer brass and neck down to 7-08mm or (2) just buy the straight Lapua 7-08 brass. Why neck down the 308 Small Rifle Primer (SRP)? In theory, SRP results in lower variation in MV; and I have generally observed that in the real world. I'm a big believer in the 'spend a bit more on brass' camp, as I find its cheaper in the long run and your results are much better, especially at >1000yds.

On bullets, I have a buddy shooting the 168gr Berger and its great. Another guy has used the 162mm Hornady Amax (now call the 162gr ELD X) forever and he is one of the best shooters I know. Focus on either of those two options and get to know the ballistics really well.

Also, there is a threat over in the AAR folder of this forum called "why not 708?" or something like that. Check that out for some more update info.

Best of luck w/ your build.
