Night Vision pvs30 in las vegas, want to compare to my simrad

Make sure you take good pictures and post the results here, I'd like to see too. If you were near Ft. Lewis, WA I could make it happen. But in LV you'll really be able to stretch the legs on those units. Make sure German brings his LRF and Hensoldt! Take pics with and without illumination. Try to use as close to the same scopes as possible, try to use high power optics so you can find out when it's usefulness maxes out.

The PVS 30, what I can say is it has a "special" tube Harris makes specifically for KAC to make these. That's what they told me when I inquired about upgrading tubes. So I guess it's not your run of the mill tube even though it's the same size. And as far as changing tubes, they don't do it, said the total cost would be the price of a new WP FDE one. The one guy with a collimator table that everyone thought might be able to do it says he can't either.

The one I have, even with a low FOM rating, has a very clear image and with a PEQ2 it does well at range too. I love these damn things. Wish I had a second one just for the spotter!

You’re not going to see anything with a pvs-30 tube or any gen3 clip on for that matter, that’s going to blow your mind and blow away the Simrad image.

The benefit comes from the mounting system and conventional design of the unit. Collimation and bore sight retention across all platforms you put it on makes the 30 attractive. The image will be on par with Simrad generally speaking but it won’t beat it.

the problem is, i believe, is it is really hard to take good pictures of the image, which is one reason i want to see for myself

i keep reading that, i guess if i get a chance, i want to see for myself. i put a seperate profile in my kestrel this time (offset and scope height) and it seemed to work good

i had been using your add a mil, then add .2 mil out to 600 ish, then normal (thanks for that tip, btw)

Yeah, it ain't easy. I'm really shitty with a camera and just have this old digital canon camera, nothing special. I got this image, and others have gotten much better images than me:

7037883

I'm guessing it's 6x, maybe a bit higher? It's a USO LR17 with milGAP reticle. It was out of focus some here too and I had to balance the rifle with all the shit on it and take a picture and I couldn't keep it centered. But there are some really good pictures through one on here, I guess it just takes a little skill and a decent camera?

I keep reading that sentence and I just don't get it.

I can see fine through it, there's the picture. Like I said, others on here have taken much, much better pictures of way farther targets. Those are leaves at about 100y, I know, boring as hell. I said I sucked at photography, didn't I?

But that picture was just taken really to show that the tube was super clear; another fellow on here got one and it was full of black flecks, some dead center. Not little shit either. Think he sent it back, someone said it probably happened when they opened it up to clean it and dust got blown around.

Where you'll get the best, I don't know, data? Is when the magnification goes up I bet. But I don't know if that'll speak so much for the SIMRAD or PVS30 or just the individual tubes in each one.

What dont you get? The Simrad on average outperforms the Pvs-30 especially in ultra low ambient light. I know it’s easy to be emotional about your investment but that’s just the way it is. It’s hard to beat a true 100mm lens.

The autogated modern newer tubes in the 30’s are great but they don’t smoke the Simrad image period. I have/had both many many times.

Agree with killswitch. AND I will add this - gen 3 night vision isn’t excellent in performance on a rifle scope. None of them are - and I have used the 30, and the 24 and the 2124LR, and 8 simrads, and and and and and.

Once you get to 10 power most of them get into the “barely works” category.

If I could do 15x AND have them work like a 30 or simrad does with powerful illum on 8x I would consider them excellent. Instead they are merely “the best out there”.
