I am looking to use what I have learned on an upcoming 300winmag build when it comes to iron shooting. I have managed to get an older 700LA already drilled and tapped from factory and want to know a couple things about iron sights on big rifles.
One is what to look for in these sights.
Two is who makes quality iron sights that could meet my requirments.

What I have so far is tracking and reliability on a magnum rifle as I don't feel the redfields on my 22 would stand up to the job from the look of their current state. I also want sights small enough to be carried in a smallish box out on the range. If lighting is good enough to practice with iron sights I want to be able to remove my scope install irons and practice. I have never shot with irons past 300meters and that was only a few times at qualifications with an M16 not a bolt gun. Ranges I intend to shoot are any and all that I can while keeping the sights and bases small enough to not be in the way. I am sure there are other aspects of sights I am missing but I figured say what I think I know and find out what others may know on this while I still have time to research.

Re: quality Iron sights

That looks to be about perfect and it would allow me to use the adjustable iris off of my 22lr. The only things is it doesn't appear they offer front sights. I have a thing about sights matching up due to the tight tolerances they are all made to. I was wondering if you had any recommendations for a front sight as well. I will be contacting the warner tool company today to ask about sight and base price and what they recommend for a front sight.

Re: quality Iron sights

I contacted Warner sights and they are setting me up with everything from top to bottom and helping me pick out the exact bases and sights I will need plus setting me up to get both front and rear sights from them. I will be sending you the parts for my next barrel to be spun up and have these bases and sights installed. Thanks for pointing me in the direction of such a helpful company Chad.
