hello guys I plan to build a training rifle after the new year and wanted your opinion on er shaw barrels. money is limited and i'm not after 1/4 moa accuracy(would be nice though)I'm wondering if I hand lapped the barrel myself (maybe firelap as well??) and polished the chamber, lapped the lugs, work the trigger, ect.... I'm pretty knowledgable and can do alot myself, but just lack a lathe to do a full custom build. my plan is to get a 22-24" 1:8twist chambered in .223AI then depending on the chamber maybe rent a reamer for a more specific application. I plan on only using 75gr a-max's loaded long. the barrel is only $160 and being a savage I can install it myself without the need of a lathe.

any insight or reccomendations for a like priced barrel would be greatly appreciated.

Re: question about er shaw barrel for a savage action.

I have used a bunch of them and they do well enough for most practical applications. I would- knowing what I know- lap the barrel, and shoot it. By round 100 it will come in and really start to shoot as well as it is ever going to.
They are a typical button rifled barrel and tend to take a little longer to break in fully, but otherwise they shoot great.
Give it a shot and I personally- knowing what I know- DO NOT recommend fire lapping with grit coated bullets. Fire lap with bullets and clean properly.

Re: question about er shaw barrel for a savage action.

I picked up a .243 barrel a while ago for my build and have been very pleased, when the planets align I can achieve 1/2 MOA accuracy with it. Is it a bench rest grade barrel...probably not, is it a good start for budget conscious shooters..absolutely!

I just picked up another in .308 that I hope to break in this week.

I had a Mauser with er shaw on it in 308 to be honest when you ran a bore scope down it it did not look the greatest kinda rough but it shot very well so
I would think it should work good for you.

Also check out adams and Bennett barrel sometime midway a smoke deals on them for a savage. I think both would make you happy

Re: question about er shaw barrel for a savage action.

I got one for a cheap barrel 20" barrel in 308 for days I was feeling lazy and didn't want to reload. So far it shoots well enough for my purposes but it is by no means a match barrel. Mine however has no problem holding 3/4 inch or better with FGMM.

Good luck,
Merritt

Re: question about er shaw barrel for a savage action.

One of the guys I go prairie dog shooting with has two guns with E.R. shaw barrels and likes them. Course, we rarely shoot further than 350, 400 yards. Depends on your purpose. They aren't a barrel for F class to be sure, but for the value and casual shooting...
The prairie dogs cant tell the difference between his barrel and my Lothar Walther.

Re: question about er shaw barrel for a savage action.

Several years ago, I had ER Shaw rebarrel a MK X Mauer action in 6.5x55. It shoots better than most factory rifles I have fired. Knowing what you want and the $$$$ you have to spend may make your decision easy.

Sounds like you are on the right track.
