Rifle Scopes question about M40 unertl mount original or not?

Hi Folks,

I have been researching a scope mount I have. I'm pretty confident it is the one used for the M40 series with the Unertl scope. The rings are fixed to the base, the top half of the rings screws in from the bottom, they are 1 inch, the base has a rectangular lug on the underside rear of the bridge/port and a 3 sided lug on the bottom front of the bridge, it looks very similar to pics I've seen here with the Unertl but the color is a matte green. I'd post pics if I knew how and would be glad to email pics. Could this be an original M40 mount or is it an aftermarket copy? Thanks for any help.

Re: question about M40 unertl mount original or not?

Look in the rifle forum on page 2 of the M40A1 build guide and check out the pictures there, it would be for a M40A1 not a M40, know Unertl and in the 90's USO made them, not sure of the green color though. Came to the right place to get the answer though

Re: question about M40 unertl mount original or not?

When Unertl was actively making these mounts, gunsmiths could order them for custom rifle builds. I bought one directly from Unertl a few years ago and it's on my M40A1.

mjh,

The pictures look just like mine except for the color and mine does not have a bead around the base of each ring.

Magua, I'm not looking to sell it, just want to try and confirm what it is.

Re: question about M40 unertl mount original or not?

It's probably a Unertl. The finish could have been done by Unertl or a gunsmith. If you post an image you might get more information. There is a thread describing how to post images, it's pretty simple, but you have to post them to a host website like Photobucket.com first.

Re: question about M40 unertl mount original or not?

I would need to see the other side but it looks like it could match my Unertl M40A1 scope mount....radial cut that leaves "notches" on the sides, slanted step in the back and a few other similarities.

I believe IBA made (had made) double lugged mounts for their early Chandler Sniper rifles (I sold mine so can not double check but my understanding was thet the mount was double lugged at the time my rifle was produced).

Re: question about M40 unertl mount original or not?

Early IBA mounts were made by D.D. Ross and so marked,I don't know who made the later ones but they were marked IBA. Neither one used bottom screw rings, if they did it's news to me. I have one of each and they both have what I was told were Leupold rings.
I have an original Unertl mount also on my A1 clone, it looks just like the pics you posted FALaska.

Re: question about M40 unertl mount original or not?

That is an original Unertl, they are the only ones that are stepped about .010 to 015 at the width of the rear clip slot bridge where it mounts. No one else made their mounts like that other than Unertl.

Re: question about M40 unertl mount original or not?

It does look like my Unertl, but painted green instead of a black oxide finish. Mine came in a white Federal stock number box. When Unertl last sold them from some place in Las Vegas, they were $500 plus ten bucks for shipping.

Re: question about M40 unertl mount original or not?

That is pretty cool news. Thanks to all for the help.

So which rifles used this particular mount, M40A1, A2 etc?

If I were to build a mostly correct rifle I wonder if I can use any factory clip slotted M700 receiver? It seems the receiver heights changed among the clip slotted M700's? (and maybe I'm asking this in the wrong place)

This site is addicting. . .

Re: question about M40 unertl mount original or not?

They were original on the M40A1.

Not all clipslots are the same; I believe there have been three different USMC standards for clipslots. The current spec is the same as the Remington factory clipslot. My Unertl MST mount had to be fitted to my M40A1 by GA Precision because it was intended for an older clipslot spec.

Yes, some older receivers have a different height at the rear and you might need to shim the mount.

My USO mount has that step for the rear bridge...

Hmmmm, this has become a more interesting question.

Re: question about M40 unertl mount original or not?

Grunt, I believe the USO has a weld bead (might be silver solder) around the bases of the stems that support the rings. The Unertl does not.
