Question about powder storage in Non Climate Controlled Garage

I need to store extra powder in my detached garage. The issue being it is not cooled during the summer. It is well insulated and rarely gets above 75 in the summer, but on occasion it could exceed that during the hottest part of the year. I've always tried to store powder in cool dark places where the temperature doesn't fluctuate. I don't think the garage fits the bill there.

Anyone have recommendations for long term powder storage in such a space?

I was think about storing the powder inside a working Refrigerator, constant 34-38 degrees year round, Anybody know why that would not be a good idea?

I should mention that I think condensation could be an issue if you pulled a cold powder container from the fridge, so In the summer months I would leave them sit out overnight before opening.

Why do you need to have it outside instead of in a climate controlled location?

Just as a good practice- don't store it in a fridge, keep it in a non confined space so you don't make a bomb.

It needs to be outside, as I've already reached the maximum amount that can be stored in a residential dwelling in an approved storage container. Anything I have over that needs to be stored somewhere else.

Can't see a fridge with a door acting as a pressure containing vessel?

I leave my powder in the garage. It's on my bench right now. It's going to be in the 40s tonight. And it will be there when its 110 in the summer too. Maybe I just have good luck or something. I just leave it in it's original container and it seems fine. Maybe I'm just lucky.

Mine is all stored inside, but as long as you only open and close the container inside (to make sure humidity doesn't effect powder) and keep it in the shade you should be fine. Especially since you noted your garage rarely gets above 75. Most of our houses are only 4-10 degrees cooler than that. I would discourage the fridge though. I don't have any experience with it, but I would be worried about condensation problems.

Same here. My garage gets blistering hot! Never had any problems

I keep mine in a old dead refrigerator.

Very mild temp swings in it and more stable humidity.

This is probably what I will end up doing, and have an non working unit now to do this with. However, I've been reading some articles on powder/ammo storage and below freezing temperatures seem to help keep powder from degrading. The warmer the climate it is stored in, the faster it degrades. What i don't know is, 5 yrs, 10 yrs, 20 etc?

Sounds like you need to shoot more ;-)

Agree with that. However, I recently had a break in at one of our vacant rental houses where I was keeping some items, extra reloading powder being one of the those. Lost roughly 35# in the theft, which I intend on replacing just want to make sure and store whatever I can't keep in the house properly.
