i have a friend who has a shoulder injury and can't shoot anything with recoil higher than that of his 223. he enjoys deer hunting, which got me thinking of the 6.8 spc, the 6.5 grendel and the 6.5 creedmoor. my question is which has the least recoil? which would work best on whitetail deer. If all else fails, i can get him a 223 with some good ammo, but i;m curious if one of these new rounds could fit the bill and do a better job.

remember, recoil is key here

Re: question for the caliber guru's

My DPMS 6.5 CM has more recoil than my DD .223 and it's much heavier. It could be braked though. The creedmoor has to be built on the AR10 chassis so if getting another rifle is out of the question the creed is automatically out. Also the creedmoor seems to like longer barrels which means more weight. Loaded down with a bull barrel is probably around 15 lbs.

It really is subjective to how much recoil is too much.

Re: question for the caliber guru's

Lots of 6.8 guys I know use the Barnes 96g TTSX on whitetail here in North Mexico and just rave about it.

The Grendel and 6.8 are very similar in recoil, however you can expect better long-range performance with the 6.5 Grendel.

Re: question for the caliber guru's

I looked at the ballistics of factory loads and of those 3 calibers, the 6.8 spc is probably going to recoil the least because it uses the lightest grain bullets. I would look for a good brake, e.g. APA bastard brake, rather than just a flash suppressor. Also could try a thick recoil pad.

Re: question for the caliber guru's

6.5 creedmoor most effective & most recoil
6.8 Spc least recoil
6.5 Grendal low recoil

Try .223 with 70 grain Barnes triple Shocks.

Re: question for the caliber guru's

Simple answer ballistically speaking 6.5 Creedmoor is the best of the bunch. Were it me I'd just build a rifle in this chamber then stick some sort of muzzle device on the end of it and call it a day.

Who sold you that lie? 6.5 Creedmoors are built on every type to rifle you can think of factory and custom, bolt and AR type rifles.

It "has to be built on an AR-10 chassis", as opposed to an AR-15 chassis.

This. You will need a tight twist (1:7) for the 70gr TSX, but the 62gr TSX or even the 55gr TSX should shoot just fine out of a 1:9 twist 223. It is plenty to take down a white tail deer. A friend of mine used his Ruger 77 in 223 to get a mule deer buck this year with one shot using factory loaded Barnes 55gr TSX.

Yes, sorry for my poor clarification.

I assumed the OP had a AR15 in .223 since he is posting in the semi auto forum and he said he had a .223 so he couldnt buy a 6.5CM upper for his existing ar15 upper.

this is an option, but i want to see if there is anything that can do the job better

Usually the simplest solution is the best. Now if you need an excuse to buy a new gun, then ...
