I went over buying a dilion a long while back but never got to ordering it because of the backlog. So I am wanting to order one soon now. But the more research that I do I am not sure which one to get. It will be for loading pistol only. I am thinking I should go with the 650 and have it setup to load 45. If you were setting up a new 650 what all would you get.

Thanks

Walter

If it's TRULY to be used for pistol only, and you seriously won't want to start loading rifle cartridges, consider the square deal b.

Really nice little machine that churns out pistol ammo nicely.

Deciding between a 550 and 650 for pistol ONLY is hard, because both have a casefeeder. But, the 650 has auto-index. Personally, I'd never buy another progressive without autoindex.

The 650 really "comes into it's own" when loading rifle cartridges, mainly because the casefeeder handles them, whereas the 550's casefeeder won't.

Good advice. The LED will help you keep the squibs away. The roller handle, strong mount and spent primer upgrade will make loading easier.

I won't say the 650 is bad without the case feeder but it is soooo much better with it.

There is also a piece of metal that goes in the ammo bin so it can hold more rounds that works well for me.

I have a co-ax that I use for rifle and will only be using this for pistol. Looks like the 650 is the best choice.

This is what I have worked up so far I think...

Dillion 650XL
Strong Mount
Dillion carbide dies for 45 acp
case feeder
low powder alarm
Powder check
4 extra primer pick up tubes
Aluminum bullet tray
little tool holder with allen wrenches and what not.
XL 650 maintenance kit spare parts kit
cover for reloader
aluminum roller handle
primer flip tray

Anything else you could think of.

650. I can shurn out 1000 per hour of .45 ACP. Others are a bit slower, still in the 800 rph range.

Case feeder and extra primer tubes and you are good to go. Oh, and I don't remember if it is extra, but the low primer alarm is good to have.

The other things are nice, but not needed to get going.

You could ditch the low powder alarm and save a little money. Not too hard to just look up once in a while. Use the savings to buy a Rapid Fill primer tube fill. Picking up individual primers with the tube gets old fast when your loading 5-600 at a whack.

I like my powder check when loading pistol. Polish the crap out of the brass sensor with "Never Dull" or similar before you use it. Otherwise it will pick up powder and drop it on your shell plate. Tighten up the little locknuts on it or they will walk. A lot of complaints are voiced about the powder check but I think its dynamite if you are using the right powder and you set it up right.

W231 flows well through the Dillon powder drop and works well in .45 ACP and will likely be acceptable for the other calibers you will soon find yourself wanting to load for. Im guessing you will load rifle on it within a years time.
