Let me start of and say I’m a newb to the precision world however not firearms. After doing some research I just wanted some knowledgeable opinions on my planned course of action.

My goals are:
1. Consistently under MOA accuracy
2. Shooting up to a max range of 700 yards for medium sized game.
3. Budget max 2000 dollars
4. I’m a youngin (18) and looking for a good starting rifle I have previous marksmanship experiences but other areas like trapshooting, Ar-15’s etc.

First I have been keeping my eye out for some type of rem 700 specifically looking toward the SPS Tactical AAC-SD

Link: http://www.remington.com/products/firearms/centerfire/model-700/model-700-sps-tactical-aac-sd.aspx

Things I know I need to get:
1. 20 or 30 MOA base(Leopold) and scope rings
2. Harris S-BR bipod
3. Leica LRF 900
4. Some type of spotting scope
5. Range book with assorted data
6. I reload and love it so have the ammunition side covered.

Things I’m iffy on:
1. Heard good things of the Leopold Mark 4 3.5-10x40mm scope is 3.5-10 range sufficient for my applications and others that are recommended?
2. How much will a different stock like a McMillan A-5 effect things is it worth the money for someone on a budget? I need to look into this but could I modify the existing stock so it free floats?
3. Is the rem 700 specifically the model listed above a good place to start?
4. Whets a good spotting scope on a budget?
5. looking for any general advice, holes/problems anywhere?

Thanks for everyone taking the time and looking forward no these questions get asked alot sorry, but look forward to putting some rounds down range soon!

Oops, should have specified better, 2000 is for the rifle and everything that will go on it.

Rough estimate of what i was thinking:
1.Rifle: Rem 700-700$
2.Rings: Leupold mark 4-100$
3.Base: Leupold mark 4-125$
4.Bipod: Harris S-BR 100$
Scope: Thinking Leupold mark 4 also open to suggestion have about 1000$ to spend and looking for some nice glass as i read this is the area not to skimp.

Re: Questions on a rem 700

I might start thinking outside of the box, A Remington 5R might be a better starting point as a rifle, don't get to set on Leupold, theres a lot of options out there when its comes down to scopes, rings and bases. Read lots of threads and keep an eye on the for sale forums, some excellent bargains if you are looking. Thats a nice mark up on that rifle compared to the standard SPS tactical and all you really get is a threaded barrel.

Re: Questions on a rem 700

Welcome to the Hide man,

1. You mentioned you wanted to purchase a McMilan stock, if that is the case, I would start with the Remington 700 Varmint. Save ya some cash on the rifle at least since you wanna scrap the stock anyways

2. On your rings/base, for that kind of money, I'd give Glen Seekins or Scott at Liberty Optics and get ya some Seekins Rings & Base (Just my opinion on that)

3. The more you read here, the more you will find Leupold is not what it once was. For the cash you are gonna drop on the scope I think you have better options out there.

Re: Questions on a rem 700

You dont take game at 700 yards, period.

Buy a barebones rifle that can do MOA, decent glass, and spend the rest on trigger time.

SPS tac. (not aac-sd, because you dont own a can, and you wont be able to in iowa)
SWFA 10x fixed glass
take off HS stock in For Sale section
powder/primers/brass/bullets

Putting the cart before the horse doesnt get you far. Learn to shoot better, learn to read wind, work on control, and then progressively purchase more expensive equipment as you need it.

Re: Questions on a rem 700

If you are going to be hunting with this rifle I would buy a larger scope than 10x and larger objective. You will want more light for early and later times of the day as well as proper identification at longer ranges.

Works for me.
