Questions regarding security clearances...

Hey all. I interviewed for and was offered a contractor position with DHS/Border Patrol in 2008. As part of the process I went through an investigation for a security clearance. The process was the usual SF-86 and then an in person interview with an investigator. Investigators also sought out my references in person and spoke with them about me.

Now I thought for a secret clearance it was just the SF-86 (NACLC) and the personal investigation part would be for a TS clearance? Either way I found out today that my clearance went active last year (the recruiter I worked with left her position and i fell into the cracks).

So, having found out today that I have a secret clearance, can I use this with other agencies or does it only apply to the position I applied for in 2008? I'm curious because I'm moving to either MD or Northern VA soon and it would come in handy to say for a fact that I indeed have a clearance.

Yes, you can use it with other agencies/companies. However, some agencies prefer doing their own investigations. As far as the contractor clearance thing goes, you will need to fill out the paperwork to have your current clearance transferred to whatever company's CAGE code you are currently working under. Its really quick and easy. As long as it hasn't been more than 24 months since the clearance was last used, you should be good to go.

Get a copy. You should be able to use it since you can refer back to it. DOD equivalent would be a Central Clearance Facility National Agency Check (NAC), but fed LE may have some other name or protocol for it.

Bottom line is you're cleared, but a prospective employer has to verify through THEIR security managers. Fairly straightforward in the digital age but there's no guarantee (i.e., your recruiter). The employer can then refer to whoever granted it to you, (i.e., "DOJ or DHS, investigation 2008, adjudicated 2009," etc.)

Thanks Chad. I have never used this clearance though. It was granted last May but they never brought me in because my recruiter left her position at the company and I fell through the cracks. I only recently found out who the new recruiter is which is how I found out I have a clearance.

You should be ok since it was just granted last May. You are still within the 24 month timeframe. Get with your current FSO and they should be able to square you away.
