    Supposedly, the 22 lr can be shot straight into the air, come back down and kill someone.??? While some 22 lr cartriges can scoot right along, shooting one straight up limits it return to earth speed to >200 fps - <300 fps. If people truly looked into terminal velocity, mass density, and diameter, they would understand just how difficult that would be.
     
    As a child I heard many uneducated kids claim that you could convert a semi-automatic 22 rifle to full auto by "filing the firing pin". Luckily, nobody under my roof fell for such hogwash and no rifles were disabled.
     
    A supersonic bullet goes through "a" transonic zone during its flight. In fact, a supersonic bullet goes through two transonic zones during its trajectory. The first zone is located just in from of the muzzle where the supersonic bore gases actually blow around/past the projectile, eventually allowing the bullet to enter still air with a brief zone (Transonic Zone 1) in which bore gas velocity is equal to the bullet's velocity. Following this phenomenon, the bullet enters still air a few feet from the muzzle, travels faster than sound for hundreds/thousands of yards and then eventually slows to the point (Transonic Zone 2) of the speed of sound downrange.
