Made a tough choice and quit my job to work on my own as a mechanic. Bought a service truck last winter and finally decided to go for it. Never was fond of working for a dealership anyway.

Re: quit my job

Good for you - your boss is making at least 50% off your back. Charge less, be honest, and good luck.

Re: quit my job

Thank you everyone. I will do my best.
That 50% off my back is no joke. I bought ALL of my tools with exception of some specialty ones. Health insurance was cheaper out of my pocket that through them. Got paid $18 an hr and they charged $95. Worked more hours than anyone in the company's service department of all 4 stores, from what I could read of the reports. Had to run the shop I was in with 2 brand new guys. One just out of vo-tech. Do all the field work.
Didn't make sense to do anything else but go on my own. Just a tough thing to do knowing I may not have work and a paycheck the next week.
Now for my shameless try at getting business

BTW I am in north central MT (Chester). A BS in Diesel tech. 7 years a cat dealership. 1 year contract work at an underground mine. Over 1.5 years at a John Deere dealership. I work out of a service truck with a crane. Lots of A/C work done in the past year. Need anything done my cell # is 406-208-3565

Quit my job of 30-years as an Executive Sous Chef for Hyatt corp. in May 2009 to take a 2-year course in gunsmithing with my son. We have a business that is going well and can't wait to graduate and put some of my savings into an 800sq. ft. shop behind my house. After a year at school, I can say that it has been a dream come true. Wish I'd done it earlier, but had to raise a kid and pay bills. It's never too late to do what you love. I couldn't put up with the pc and corporate bs ever again.

Love to hear stories like yours.

Re: quit my job

Montana,
You have made the hardest decision already. I did 12 years ago and have not looked back. Be fair in your dealings, hold to your word, and live up to your commitments, the rest will fall into place. Listen to your customers complaints about others they have used to do what your doing for them now, dont make the same mistakes.

Re: quit my job

You DUMB ASS,.....what were you thinking when you quit????

Sorry, couldn't help but say that, it just seemed the positive thing to say as you need motivation.lol

From what I know of you montana and your personality you will have no issues with finding business and making a living. Hell least that service truck knows its way around in the snow storms, not????

Re: quit my job

Congratulations and the best of luck to you. Going out on your own take alot of courage, I very much respect that!

Re: quit my job

The only other advice I can give is to never over-commit. That has killed more small businesses than the bad economy. Don't take in more that you can do and don't make promises you can't keep. Your reputation will be 95% of your success.

Re: quit my job

I'm getting laid off and will be private contracting computer work around town - my reputation speaks for itself - except one porn addict taht got RE infected I normally get praise from my customers.

SO yeah, ya did the right thing - DO NOT UNDERSELL YOURSELF!!!!!!!!!
