Rainer Ultramatch & Rock Creek SPR Testing

Well I just love testing different AR barrels to see how they perform compared to others I've tested. As most know I am a huge White Oak fan. I have almost every flavor they sell, 10.5", 16", 18" SPR and 20" SDM all 1:7 .223 Wylde. They are all tack drivers!

Over the summer I set out to build a precision 300blk SBR/Pistol. I wanted it to be extremely accurate from 100yd and in for personal protection home/car gun. I have a few buddies that have multiple 300blks and all claimed they are fun guns but not precision guns. I set out to see if I could build a precision 300blk. I went through a few different barrels ranging from $225-$300 and the first few were OK and thats giving more credit than deserved. Thats after testing multiple bullets and powders. I sold each barrel at a loss and the last barrel I decided to try before giving up on the project was a Rainer Ultramatch 10.5" Shillen blank. The barrel is a straight tack driver with 125smk and 125tmk. After shooting 40rd to break in the barrel I did an OCW test with the 125tmk and H110 in 1xLC converted brass and CCI 450's. I settled on 18.6g. I loaded up 40rd and shot a 7x5 target and the agg across these 7 groups was .521"!! I never let the barrel cool, I just shot group after group. Thats from a 300blk SBR at 100yds with a bipod and rear bag. I was extremely pleased with this result so I decided just for fun I wanted to see how far out I can accurately take this setup. The magnetospeed had it at 2100fps so I input the data into Shooter and setup on a IDPA full size piece of steel at 500yds. I went 10 for 10 on the steel. My friends were amazed of the accuracy of this gun.

OCW_H110_125TMK_7x5_07-15-16_OnTarget_zpsdtbzvdin.jpg

This is the reason Im itching to try Rainer's Ultramatch barrels to see how the stack up against my White Oaks! I just cant decide if I want to test the 18" Ultramatch SPR or their 20" SDM barrel. I most likely will test out the 20" since I have the most recent data and testing with my 20" WOA SDM to do a side by side comparison with loads. If the the Ultramatch performs great I will probably buy the next barrel down which is their Rock Creek version then the next level down Match version to see how they compare to the Ultramatch. Ordering the barrel today so testing will start in the next few weeks.

Stay tuned...

Build Parts I already have for this upper testing:

BCM Upper Receiver
Spikes NiB Milspec BCG
BCM CH
SLR Sentry 7 AGB
Seekins 15" Keymod Handguard
Vortex Razor HD 5-20x50 MIL/MIL
Vortex PMR 35mm Rings

They are actually around $100 cheaper; depending on which you buy. I'm gonna try the 18" Ultramatch SPR Shillen blank under $400

Well order has been placed. I went with the 18" Ultramatch SPR. Really happy I ordered it tonight, because upon checkout it applied a $76.85 discount to my order so after expedited shipping total was only $318 instead of just over $400!!! No idea what the discount is. Im going to add the Rock Creek barrel to my cart and try and check out again, if it applies the same crazy discount I will order and test that one also!!

EDIT: Yep, for some reason after adding any of the barrels to your cart a 20% discount is automatically applied!! Time to grab a few to do some testing over the winter months!

I have a SPR 18 ultra match.
At first it was ok.
Then it got Real good.
Very happy with it.
It LOVES 69 & 77 smk's
I can still often get moa 5shot groups even with a 1x4 scope on that rifle.

Our team shot Shilen blanks at Camp Perry this year. We came away with multiple national titles, including three individual national records and a team national record. They shoot.

Well got a call from Rainer last night informing me that the 18" Ultramatch SPR I ordered is out of stock even thought it said 2 In Stock when I ordered!!! GGrrrr

They put my order on backorder till I tell them what I want to do. They have no timeframe when the SPR will be back in stock. I may just have them change it to the 20" Ultramatch Shillen blank so we can get this testing going.

Well I got a shipping notification without even speaking with them about the out of stock 18" barrel. Shipping email says 18" Ultramatch SPR so maybe they found one.... IDK. Will be here next week!

Also got the 18" Rainer Rock Creek SPR barrel to test. It was hard to turn down with the sale going on. At just over $200 if it hammers it might be the best value out there.

Watching with interest. AR-Comp & 77smk's worked well in my 223 wylde 18" SPR rock barrel. Nice mild powder for the 223, it did require me to open my gas block up a couple clicks. I was using either imr8208 or H4895 prior to that.

Wow thats a lot of AR Comp!! Most loads Im finding are saying 22.4-22.6 is their load. Let me know

Edit:

Just found your post in the Reloading Depot. You posted 22g-22.8g which is in line with what others are using with AR Comp.

Re: Rainer Ultramatch & Rock Creek SPR Testing

Just found that post in the depot, I am positive the load was 23.8 now, If you can see the target pic it shows it (not a very good group at the time) and velocity was 2774 sd-7 es-18. I was using LC brass and over the course of 5-6 trips to the range shooting the same load on the same pieces of brass I can say that load was safe in my barrel. Also of note when searching my email with my shooting partner it is a very high case volume. I use a drop to to load everything and I noted to him that the case was full but not getting any spring back on the bullet to change OAL...

IIRC there was another node a little south of that around 23 grains that was also good.

22.4 AR Comp / LC brass / 77 gets me 2730 fps in two different 20" Shilen barrels / wylde chambers. 23.0 puts me over 2800 and heavy ejector marks. I do run 23.0 with the 80 smk / 80.5 berger in my of my match rifle, but loaded out almost .150" past mag length, and they have a lot less bearing surface so they build less pressure anyway. I would definitely look carefully at the brass as you go up.

I received my UltraMatch today. They did in fact swap out the 18" UltraMatch Shillen for the 20" UltraMatch Shillen since the 18" was out of stock with no return date in sight. I also receiver the Aero Precision 15" Keymod forend I got on Christmas sale for $89.99. I bought it to test. It seems solid, for $89 I think its a great deal. Also got a melonite rifle length gas tube and SLR Sentry 7 AGB. Have some Young and Spikes BCG's in the safe so I decided to use the Young BCG.

The BCM M4 upper has a slightly undersized barrel extension requiring you to heat it up with a heat gun to slip the barrel in for a nice tight fit per BCM instructions. After applying a little heat and a light film of Valvoline Synthetic grease to the barrel extension the barrel slipped in nicely. I then installed the BAR barrel nut with some anti-seize on the threads and torqued it down till the gas tube hole lined up (55 ft lbs).

Going to load up 40rds of Nosler 77c / 23.6g 8208XBR to break in the barrel a bit then will shoot my go to 77smk load to test for accuracy and report back. After that I will start load development testing with 77smk, 75BTHP, 73 ELDM, 70RDF.

I made it out today to shoot the OCW's I had loaded up. It was 31F and calm conditions. Everything was shot over the Magnetospeed V3 at 100yds from the bench, bipod and rear bag. Scope is a Razor HD Gen 1 5-20x50 Mil/Mil I borrowed off my 6.5cm semi for testing. Lower is a AeroPrecision Gen2 lower, Magpul PRS Stock, Rifle buffer and spring, Geissele SD-E trigger, ERGO Tactical Deluxe Grip.

All the test loads below were loaded just under magazine length. 2.261 - 2.265 COAL depending on the bullet. I am using metal BCM mags which allow a max COAL just over 2.27". Seating depth measured base to ogive is marked on each OCW target.

I am very happy the UltraMatch liked this combo. The 73 ELD-M did not shoot well in my 20" WOA SDM barrel after testing multiple powders and seating depths. At $7/100 cheaper than 77smk and higher BC this is my new favorite combo! Looks like a node between 23.2-23.6. Going to load up a seating depth test at 23.4g and see if the group shrinks anymore. The velocity and SD numbers are exactly what I was looking for!

Pretty good results. I have a ton of these bullets, they shot OK, but not nearly as well as the 77smk in my WOA's. They are definitely shooting better out of this Rainier. Looks like a node between 23.1-23.5. Might also be another node starting at 23.9g. I dont have any ejector swipe on the cases at 23.9 but primers are just starting to slightly flatten. I might load up 23.8-24.2g in .1g increments and retest.

Nosler 77cc- 8208 XBR - 3xLC - Federal 205 - 1.8715" Base to Ogive

So I bought a few thousand of these a LONG time ago to shoot during 2 gun matches out of my 16" WOA at the recommendation of a fellow 2gun shooter. I just couldnt get these to shoot anywhere near as accurate as my 77smk load so they have been sitting on the shelf collecting dust. Every new match barrel I test I always try these in it and none like it. I tested my 10.5", 16", 18" and 20" WOA's but the WOA just dont like this bullet. I am very happy to see this UltraMatch loves this combo. Node between 23.1-23.6. Excellent accuracy and SD's but velocity is lower than desired.

Looks like a node between 23.1 and 23.6. Velocity is pretty good, not as good as my 20" WOA but this barrel might speed up after a few hundred rounds. Looks like Im going to have to play with seating depth to see if my groups shrink up to match the accuracy of my 20" WOA SDM. Going to load up a seating depth test at 23.3g and see how that does.

Re: Rainer Ultramatch & Rock Creek SPR Testing

Overall I am very happy with the 20" Rainier UltraMatch Shillen barrel. I got it for $100 cheaper than my 20" WOA SDM with the 20% off sale last week which I would say is a steal after seeing how it shoots. Even at full price this barrel is well worth it.

I initially put 55rd through it to break it in last week then gave it a good cleaning before doing OCW testing. I put 35rd down the clean barrel today to foul it before starting testing. After the initial break in and OCW testing today I have 193rd through it. I will continue posting my results here as I test this barrel further. After doing some additional seating depth testing I will then take my final loads to 500yd for testing.

18" Rainier Rock Creek SPR arrived today. I also have another SLR Sentry 7 AGB and gas tube arrive. Waiting on another BCM upper which will be here end of week. That will be the next round of tests.

Got back out to dont some additional testing with this UltraMatch upper. Loaded up a seating depth test for the 73 ELD-M with 23.4g and did another OCW with the 75BTHP in .1g increments from 23.8-24.2 to see if that was another node forming. It sure is, POI is the same for each of those groups. I will probably skip doing a seating depth test with that high node because Im seeing swipes on the case heads.

I am very happy this barrel loves the new 73 ELD-M. Seating depth test shrunk those groups right up. They definitely like to be closer to the lands. Those measurements on the target are ogive measurements but COAL for those 2 tight groups are in the 2.267-2.271 range. The feed no problem from my metal BCM mags. I am going to load up 50rd and test them at distance. This load is very accurate at 100yd with single digit SD and velocity in the 2775 range.

No problem. As you can mine loves the new 73ELD-M and 77cc. Didnt do any seating depth testing with the 75BTHP or 77smk to see if those groups shrink up. Bit delayed with my son having an ear infection. Its 65F outside today but no shooting for me....

Got this 20" Shillen Ultramatch back out today to get final chrono numbers and confirm accuracy with my new 73 ELD-M load. Velocity over the v3 was 2800 SD7.5. Then removed the v3 and shot two groups of 5 shots each to confirm accuracy. Im loving this barrel. Just have to fix my zero. Got windage adjusted perfectly on the second group but have to bring it up a little before testing at distance.

Great thread. I'm looking forward to your Rock 18 barrel. I have a 20 rock also from rainier arms but have not gotten many rounds through it yet. So far it shoots good with factory match and as long as I'm not screwing it up.

I bought a rainier rock barrel from aim surplus when they had them.
It's a 16" rifle gas length 1:8 wylde
I'm running the 77gr tmk 556 from black hills right now and it has been shooting great from me. I haven't truely test accuracy potential as far as my skill set goes. As in I have a 2.5-7 weaver mounted and to really test it for groups with my abilities I need to mount a higher mag scope.
But I consistently get one inch 5 shot groups usually better with this combination.

Ok got my testing scope switched over and the upper mounted on the lower. 18" Rainier Rock Creek SPR is ready for testing. Loading up 50rd 77cc/23.6 8208XBR to break in the upper than will start load development to see what it likes best.

I got out this afternoon in the light rain to put 35rd of 77cc/8208 through it just to function test it and break it in. All is good. The last 10-15rd really started to group nicely which is promising. Now on to load development for this barrel. I loaded up 75BTHP and 73ELDM OCW's with 8208XBR tonight. Will shoot them tomorrow.

Padom
Following this and now I want to build a precision AR this year.
Curious, how far to you jump your bullets for your OCW before you settle on a node and start tweaking seating depth. Also, do you tend to go more towards jump or jam once you leave your "standard" or do both to see what works best?
thanks for the awesome stuff in this thread, very interesting and helpful.

I typically load all my OCW tests to roughly 2.26". Once I find my OCW i then do a seating depth going both closer and farther from the lands in .003 increments. My metal mags allow a max COAL of roughly 2.271" so I only go as close to the lands that will still feed in my mag.

As shown in my above 73 ELDM seating depth test, when you find the seating depth your barrel likes groups shrink right up. It all depends on the barrel though. My WOA liked to be seated in the 2.248" COAL range with 77smk. These 73 ELDM like to be closer to the lands so loaded longer.

After putting 35rd through the barrel yesterday I ran a wet patch through it then dry patched it out. I then put another 35rd of 77cc through it today to foul the barrel and get it ready for load development. I let the barrel cool and started my OCW tests with 70rd down the barrel.

The 73 ELD-M's didn't perform like they did in the 20" Ultramatch. The SD's are high compared to all my go to precision AR loads which are all in the single digits. Primers just starting to get slightly flat and ejector marks at 24.0g and heavier at 24.2g.

73 ELD-M ~ 8208 XBR ~ 3xLC ~ 205 ~ 1.825" Ogive

GJAkJ2L.jpg

The 75 BTHP performed really well. Good velocity numbers and nice low SD's for pretty much all the charge weights. Loads from 23.2 - 24.0 all wanted to group showing me a seating depth test should shrink things right up. Primers look great for all the charge weights with a faint ejector mark on 24.0g and slightly heavier for 24.2g. Im going to load up 23.5g and do a seating depth test to see how the groups shrink up. These were loaded longer than Ive ever tested in any AR barrel. They liked to be farther away from the lands in my other barrels so I suspect thats where Ill find the smallest groups.

75 BTHP ~ 8208 XBR ~ 3xLC ~ 205 ~ 1.858" Ogive

LhG7sq8.jpg

Will load the seating depth test up tonight and test tomorrow and report back. I probably wont test anymore bullets if the 75BTHP groups shrink right up. I bought these barrels and wanted to do this testing to see if they would shoot the cheaper, higher BC Hornady bullets compared to 77smk, 77TMK, 69TMK, 69SMK and 70 RDF. My WOA's LOVE 77smk but did not favor the cheaper, higher BC Hornady bullets. Im glad the 20" Ultramatch loves the 73 ELDM and that will be my go to load for that barrel. If I can get nice tiny groups and single digit SD's from this 18" Rainier Rock Creek SPR barrel with 75BTHP then I will call the purchases and testing a success.

73ELD-M $20.80\100 vs 77smk $28.25\100

75BTHP $95.83\600 vs 77smk $120.78\500

I have not for some time now. I did but after shooting 1xLC annealed in my 16" WOA, 18" WOA, 20" WOA I found fired case headspace to be the same. I just bump it all .003 with a Forster FL sizing die, trim to length and it all goes into a bin ready for loading. All testing has been done with 3xLC annealed brass

Re: Rainer Ultramatch & Rock Creek SPR Testing

Only you will know the answer to that. You need to take the same brass headstamp, LC for example that has been fired in each rifle your going to reload for and measure the fired case headspace with the Hornady Case comparator and your calipers. I usually will measure 3 pcs per rifle and write down the avg. Now compare the number you got for each rifle..Are they the same or within a .001-.002?? If so you now setup your FL sizing die to bump your cases back .003 from the smallest number you got and that brass will now fire in all your rifles.

If you find the brass headspace measurement for one of your guns is drastically different then I would keep brass fired in that gun separate.

Was able to get to the range and do the 75BTHP seating depth test with 23.6g 8208XBR and I also decided to load up a Nosler 77cc OCW test since I have so many of them. My WOA's hate them, the Rainier Ultramatch shot them pretty darn well so I figured I should give them a go in this Rock Creek barrel.

Seating Depth Test: 75BTHP ~ 23.6g 8208XBR ~ 205 ~ 3xLC

CvrVqxc.jpg

All in all the best group with this seating depth test is right at 0.50". Pretty darn good for a barrel I paid $207 for during the Rainier December 20% off sale. Im really happy how this barrel performs, more so when you look at what it cost compared to the other top shooters out there. I would say you do gain slightly tighter groups with the Ultramatch (Shilen) barrel but not much. You have to decide if the additional $100 is worth it or not. I am going to load up another seating depth test between 1.860 - 1.870 in .002 increments just to make sure I didnt skip over a slightly tighter grouping jumping in 0.0055" increments.

77cc ~ 8208XBR ~ 205 ~ 3xLC ~ 1.8760" Ogive

ZKVOGJV.jpg

The Nosler's again shot pretty darn well, just like in the Ultramatch. Way better than they shoot in my WOA's. Primers are nice and round, no pressure signs what so ever until 24.2g which has a very slight ejector mark. I may do a seating depth test with these but they look pretty darn good for a cheap bullet out of a relatively low priced barrel. While 23.6 is damn tight the center of the node looks to be around 23.8-24g with single digit SD. I may load a seating depth test up and see if I can get 23.9g to shrink below 0.5moa. I have a ton of these bullets and they have shot the best out of this barrel compared to about 5 other barrels tested over the past 2 years. Might actually be able to use them up.

I don't reload so I'll be testing different factory ammo. I put this rifle together to run some PRS gas gun and local matches with. So far I'm digging this rifle and loving my barrel choice!

Thank you, I will order some and that's a great price for quality ammo. I posted too soon above. I said 1/2" because I eyeballed them before actual measuring. I just pulled the targets out and actually measured, there were three groups that came in at 3/8". So I'm even happier now with this first outing using factory match ammo. Sorry Padom if that makes your head spin, you're so good at documenting everything.

I was able to get out and test the Rock Creek SPR a little more this week and the 75 BTHP's were very accurate along with the 77cc. This is a very nice barrel for the price. I will be posting the 18" Rainier Rock Creek barrel in the FS section since I cant keep them all. I have way too many AR15 barrels and uppers on the bench and need to thin the heard so I can grab some more stuff to test/review. Trying to acquire the 18" Rainier Ultramatch SPR for testing which is the barrel I originally said I was going to test but they were out of stock after I placed my order. I will also be testing the Rubber City QPQ AR15 BCG in a new upper if I can get an 18" Ultramatch. While we hear a lot about Rubber City BCG's, I dont see really any reviewed here. I ordered a couple and will test them out and post my results here.

No, the 70 RDF's in my testing were not anywhere near as accurate as the other bullets tested at max mag length therefore my testing is done with them in the AR. Maybe give them another try in the future in a bolt gun.

Yes, Ive had both Bartlein and Kreiger Compass Lake barrels. The point of my testing is to see how less expensive options stack up accuracy wise to those barrels. WOA and the Rainier Ultramatch barrels hold their own in my testing.

I picked up 300 of the 70 RDF. They're 2.380 to the lands in my 16 WOA. 2.4 to the lands in a 700 w/ a Douglas barrel. I can't see a use for them other than a bolt gun or slow fire 600 ammo for high power.

I mean my test sample is so small but from the 2 Ultramatch's (shilen blanks) Ive tested they have ALL shot lights out. I have my 3rd Ultramatch, 18" SPR arriving in a day or two but I dont expect it to shoot any different than my other Ultramatches. The Bartlein/Kreiger Compass Lake barrels shoot, but those blanks start off more expensive than most which keeps their price high. I wouldnt say my CL barrels shot any better or worse than my Ultramatchs or WOA's.

Im a huge Bartlein fan and have many of them. They are awesome barrels. You have to make the choice. Shilen says the ratchet rifling on the Ultramatch blanks make for a easier to clean, longer lasting barrel. Time will tell.

I have a RA Ultramatch on my current SPR build. Shoots .5-.75 moa. usually closer to .75. But a fair amount at .5. I'm not the best shooter, but not a slouch either. Have about 2100 rounds down mine and it still shoots very nice.

I have a RCA low mass carrier that I have for my new CLE Krieger build I will be running with a TBAC223 Ultra. Bolt was matched to the barrel. Curious to hear your feedback on that carrier. Can't wait to get the rifle put together once my can gets out of jail. Hopefully it will be here once I have 3000-3200 down the Ultramatch.

I didnt have the greatest luck with those 2 bullets in my 20" Ultramatch testing, while my WOA barrels love both of them.

The Ultramatch in my tested loved the 73ELDM, 77cc and 75 BTHP best, in that order.

I am going to pick up a box of the 73ELD just to try out, since you had such great results.

Really been looking at the ultra match for a new barrel on my 300 blk. Now I guess it's time. Thanks for the info

You can't beat the 300Blk 10.5" Ultramatch. I mean my target above shows that. It just straight hammers.

So I did get out last week for a quick session to function test the newly built 18" Rainier UltraMatch SPR upper with the Rubber City Armory BCG. Functioned flawlessly. Gotta get out and get some load development testing done on it but it really like the 75 BTHP and 73 ELD-M best which is exactly how the 20" Ultramatch performed.

Ultramatch is arriving tomorrow, Rock Creek Monday. Nosler RDF's arrived today and 3 more boxes of 73 ELD-M. Gonna load up some OCW to test after break in. Have 77smk loaded, will put 35 down range before any testing.

Nice build....And a very creative way to utilize old furniture.

I have ave the same build with an 18” Rainier 18” wylde barrel.

Glad to see I'm not he only one who can't get RDFs to shoot. Damn things jump a mile at mag length.

first 5 shots at 200yds

Damn. Lets hear about the ammo.

anything constructive to add? i didn't say it was a good choice for home defense. maybe somebody does use it for home defense. are you 100% sure noboby uses it?i don't think it really matters what you use from close range at almost 3000 fps as long as its reliable.

I think I've added tons of constructive information to this testing/review thread I started.. it actually does matter what you use but you go ahead and sling 3000fps 5.56 rounds in your house. I know I won't be.

do us a favor post up a 5x5 or 6x5 instead of a cherry picked group so we can see a real assessment of that barrel.

what are you? some internet tough guy? i showed my groups from this barrel. not sure what ''cherry picked groups'' are? these were my first groups out of this barrel after mounting my scope. i didnt pick the best groups and post them . it was consistent. you want to bash a guy because he got better groups than you with factory ammo?maybe you're just not good at shooting or you got a bad barrel. if you really doubt these groups, come see me sometime,i'll repeat them. bring your checkbook. also, don't assume things, your bad at it. i don't use a rifle for home defense. never said i did. i'm sure some really good guys stay away from this site because of clowns like yourself.

Better groups than me? Don't know how to shoot? Lolololol.

watch yourself tough guy. We don't judge barrels around here by single groups.. 5x6 are how we determine a barrels accuracy. Stick around a little while, maybe you'll learn something.

When you’ve been around this site longer than 11 posts, and have read around a bit, you’ll quickly find more than ample evidence of Padom’s contributions to loading in general, semi autos more specifically, and even to those not yet smart enough to know what they don’t know. To borrow from a song, “it’s a long road to wisdom, and a short one to being ignored”. My money’s on Padom, every time.

Tried the 73gr load in 2 Rainier Ultramatch barrels, with both producing sub half moa results! Thanks for the leg Work Padom!
