It was a beautiful day in Ohio yesterday which made for a perfect day at the range. Although my intentions were to practice shooting from concealment with my carry setup, and later practice some carbine drills with the AR, I couldn't resist bringing my newish long range bolt action rifle to see what kind of groups I could get with two types of ammo.

Rifle is a Savage 10fcp-k in 308. The ammunition I brought to try out was some Freedom Munitions 150 grain remanufactured FMJ, and some Federal Gold Medal Match 168 grain SMK's. I did not have high expectations for the Freedom Munitions, which was a good thing. I only hoped they would be somewhat on par with the previous and only ammo I have shot out of this rifle so far, which was some PMC 147 grain FMJ. Needless to say I was a bit dissapointed, however I was very pleased with the FGMM 168 grain SMK's.

I used my range finder and set the target up at 100 yards. Shooting from the bench using a bipod and my hand for rear support, I fired 4 shot groups on to the target. The center and top two groups were with the Freedom Munitions ammo, the bottom two groups with the FGMM.

I am a realist and do not expect to shoot half MOA with this rifle, so seeing an MOA and sub MOA 4 shot group using the FGMM made me very happy. Both of those groups even had a bullet go pretty much through the same hole. I still have to get more practice with this rifle and better my skills and hopefully in the near future I can be consistent with shooting sub MOA with this ammo.

I have not shot many groups with this rifle and that top right group using the Freedom Munitions ammo was by far my worst one yet. I was pleased with the top left group using the same ammo, so I am really not sure if I just really screwed it up bad, or if the remanufactured rounds are just that inconsistent. As for the group in the center, I thought that was pretty strange to shoot a vertical line like that. Anyhow, just wanted to post my results as this is my first time using the FGMM out of this rifle. I will surely be getting more of it until I start reloading myself.

If you put the time and effort into the rifle and what load it likes, you will more than likely be able to get to .5MOA with reloads. Savage makes an impressive rifle, just spend some time with it, and you will be greatly rewarded for your efforts!!

I have the exact same rifle. Mine likes the 175gr smks with varget and 2.800oal. I haven't played with much beyond that. Bwhen I do my part it shoots .5moa. And I have the targets to prove it at home :)

Thanks for the encouragement. I'm going to get a box here and there of the FGMM 168's and see how consistent I can be with them staying at MOA and under. For the sake of practice with plinking at long range at steel, and collecting brass for when I do begin reloading, I will also get more PMC 147 grain fmj because the rifle seemed to shoot pretty decent with that when I ran it previously. Any recommendations for other factory match grade ammo I should try out?
