Rangefinding binoculars vs separate units

I presently have Swarovski 10x42 SLC binoculars and the Swarovski Laser Guide Rangefinder. They both have served me well, but I'm intrigued by the Swarovski 10x42 EL Range binoculars. The idea of having to carry just one piece of equipment certainly is attractive. My concerns are the possibility of compromises in the functionality vs separate units as well as the technology of rangefinders advancing more quickly than binoculars, thus rendering the whole thing obsolete.

I'd appreciate any opinions, especially from those that have made the switch.

Thanks,
Mike

Re: Rangefinding binoculars vs separate units

i have not made the switch...yet.

I too am very attracted byt the reduction in equipment. much like the Garmin rino did with my GPS and radio.

I would only be worried in the advancment of rangfinding features if you want more than just distance to target. I am not much into angles and temps for my hunting use (typically 500yds and less).

I ca tell you I was worried about GPS advancements after i got my rino, but all they have added is touch screens and cameras. not valuable to me.

I say if you like the idea, have tested the equipment and still want to buy it, go for it. I would be suprised if a paradym shift in bino or range finder tech comes shortly.

And remember to post a field report.

Re: Rangefinding binoculars vs separate units

my gunsmith is selling the leica geovid for years now (and i know a few that have them) ... they are more than happy with it. one less item in the backpack, less weight to carry, yet all the features that you need - distance and sight.

i'd go for a leica (notably cheaper than the swaro), but will wait until next spring. leica just came with an angle measurement on their rangefinders ... i hope they will add it soon to their geovids as well. the iwa 2013 will likely tell.

Re: Rangefinding binoculars vs separate units

i bought a pair of the Bushnell 1600 bino/rangfinders a couple years ago. i'm absolutely thrilled with the capabilities and accuracy of it, i just hate the eyecups. another thing you will hear about is the "blue tint" to them, yes it's true, there is a tint, but does not hurt a thing. obviously i recommend them and wouldn't hesitate to buy it again.

strange--- i bought mine for $700 a couple years ago...

Re: Rangefinding binoculars vs separate units

I carried the Leica's from just a year or so after they were introduced until this year. I just made the switch to the Swaro's. Optical quality on both is exactly what's expected. The feel and ergonomics of the Swaro's is great. I've had no issues out to 1300 yards with the rangefinder and the new slope distance is a great feature. The Leica's are not as friendly to right handed bow hunters, but are time proven.

Re: Rangefinding binoculars vs separate units

I really like my Bushnell Fusion LRF binos. Now I don't need to haul both rangefinder & binos.

(See my writeup in the "Bushnell Fusion" post here.)
