Looking at a new rifle and want to keep it light so synthetic seems the only way to go. Have a few in mind but don't have much experience with factory synthetics other than Savage/Stevens.

How do Tikka, Remington SPS and Savage rank among factory synthetics?

Re: Rank factory sythetic stocks.. any worthy?

The HS precision stocks arent too bad. They are rigid which I like. The worst thing in some synthetic stocks is inherent flex. I have seen this on a few Steyr rifles where the stock would rub the barrel on occasion.

Re: Rank factory sythetic stocks.. any worthy?

With the exception of some of the HS Precision stocks offered on "factory" rifles, all of the factory synthetic stocks are pretty "RANK."

"Synthetic" covers a pretty broad spectrum. Are you talking about plastic or fiberglass?

I have not found any plastic stocks that I would consider satisfactory. If I was going for a lightweight synthetic stock I would look at a Manners or McMillan composite stock. McMillan offers their "edge" lightweight stocks and I believe Manners offers a lightweigt as well.

try to get your hands on one of the oldr model howas, just before they made them with the hogue they come with now....the synthetic stock i have is not too bad at all....

has a right handed palm swell, and nice wide beavertail forend, give it a skim bedding job and it shoots REAL one hole groups at 100. they are a couple of years old though so you might have to search through the back room of some gun shops... i did... but it was cheaper as it was an older model........still brand new though..... best purchase i have made from a local gunshop...ever....shot a whole family of foxes last night with it...

Tikka is good and I would not swap out. The flutted barrel series hover just under 5.5 pounds for short action with 1moa guarantee. Around $200 more than SPS or standard Savage but I think worth the extra coin. Down side is the detachable mag, for the price they could offer a better mag.

SPS pretty flimsy but work.

New Savage with alloy block is quite stiff but slick. Their weather guard series did the trick for off the shelf.

I agree the Browning is one of the best as long as you stay away from some of their ti series that require special scope bases.

I like the new Winchester too if you can find one.

Remington SPS (T) was garbage (now has XLR)

PSS was OK, but nothing spectacular. It was replaced with a McMillan A3 (but this was some time ago).

OTOH, Sako TRG stocks are excellent! I have no intention. of replacing mine, although I'm not sure there is even an aftermarket stock available for them. Very ergonomic, adjustable, and rigid.

Personal opinion: if you go with the SPS, you are probably going to want to replace the stock.

Re: Rank factory sythetic stocks.. any worthy?

I have no experience with a Tikka, but I haven't heard anything bad about them...quite the contrary.

As for the barrel length, I suppose that will depend on the intended use; if maneuverability or weight are issues, go with the shorter one. My .223 varmint gun wears a 26", but it's not like I'm humping it through the woods up and down the mountains.

Hawk, I have a Tikka in .223 and it is a blast to shoot. Its alot of bang for the buck too!

Also I have a Winchester 300WSM for my hunting rifle and I have been very pleased the factory stock.

I have a Remington 700 Var. SPS. Factory synthetic stock was a step above Ramline. I choose Bell & Carlson Medalist Target A5,
VERY HAPPY ! Buddies have McMillian, Manners, and HS Precision,
and are All Happy with their choices !
