I am about at my wits end with this.

I can get the Chargemaster to calibrate without a problem and have gone through the routine about 100 times. The issue is that EVERY time when I throw charges and weight them on my Dillion balance beam scale and my RCBS 505 scale the Chargemaster is throwing .4 grains under the desired charge.

This happens every time. Yes, it seems to be consistent, but the charge is always .4 grains under the keyed charge. I know I can simply add .4 to the charge I key in, but that's besides the point.

Are the 2 calibration weights it came with off?

I don't have anything else plugged into the outlet, my cell phone isn't in the room, etc. I just can't seem to figure it out and the only thing I can think of is that the 2 weights it came with are throwing the calibration off.

I have 0.3 grains difference between my Chargemaster and my RCBS 5-0-5.

    Which one is wrong?

My advice would be to try out some "balance check weights" on the Chargemaster. If its reading wrong maybe RCBS can do something about it for you.

If your beams are busted then thats another story.

Doubt its the scales because they are both coming up with the same weight for the charge.

I changed the charge weight to make sure as well. It's always .04 less on the scales than it is on the Chargemaster.

I would think if I had to pick between one or the other, I would always go with the balance beam scale over an electronic scale.

    Yep.

    How did you know?

    And I'll check the grams.

One is 50.0 the other is 49.77

Call rcbs, they will probably send you new check weights with a bit of luck

I recall reading a few threads suggesting Varget isn't the most forgiving powder to use. I've linked in a few threads which has the odd comment on it and re-programme/straw suggestions that seem to be popular if you haven't seen them already.

Varget and IMR4064 is what got me to never use a Dillon press for anything outside of reloading 5.56 with ball powder.

I have my McDonald's straw and it seems to help with the overthrows as I used to get roughly 1 in 3 before the straw trick. Now it's maybe 1 in 15, so that's a plus.

I wrapped some tape around the 49.77 check weight and got it to read 50.0 and then recalibrate the machine again. Now it's throwing .2 under, consistently. Seems that's just the way it's going to be, which kind of sucks. I've been considering selling it for quite a while as I was thinking of going back to a higher end powder thrower that was manual due to my tendency to weigh/trickle each load anyways; this completely defeats the purpose of the Chargemaster.

    Re: RCBS Chargemaster Calibration Issue

    I would call RCBS.

I have only got a couple hundred charges through my chargemaster. RE15 and IMR4064. Both are pretty consistent. I have been checking the charges on my Rangemaster 750 and now and then I will get a .1-.2 over or under, but they are usually dead on. Reprogramming made it faster and I just stuck the straw in, but I have yet to throw charges with the staw mod.

The Chargemaster I have is definitely a keeper.

Call RCBS and ask them to walk you through the units settings. They will get you into the diag mode which can be adjusted to cure your error.

If that doesn't work I'd ask for a replacement. RCBS has excellent customer service. Thry will probably send you a brand new one. Thet did for me when mine wouln't calibrate after having it only 10 weeks.
