Currently back in graduate school and have one of those under bed slide out safes from snapsafe. It has me limited to a 20 inch barrel on my "do all" rifle.... A Suped up 700 ADL Sps tactical rifle. I "built" it so I could go hunting with my fraternity/ shoot at the local ranges in my time off (90 bucks for a 1K range 45 minutes from school)... Graduation is coming soon, and I am interested in planning my next steps. I'd like to go back to a 24 inch barrel, but I am not sure if I should just buy a 308 R700 5R barreled action or rebarrel the current action. This will probably be a year or 2 down the road once I get settled in again. Suggestions? I like the way the rifle is set up right now so I would like to stay in a 700 foot print. Looking at the longer barrel for some additional velocity...

I have build two identical rifles with Savage 111 lady hunter being a donor for both. My wife's rifle is 20" (just as factory lady hunter) and I went with 24" for my rig. Both barrels are Krieger 5R 1:8. Both rifles were chambered with my reamers (6.5x55). both have identical Ken Farrell one piece scope bases, same modified Seekins muzzlebreaks opened up from 556 to .284 (supposedly ideal .020 over bullet diameter), both have same rings and lastly same Bushnell 6500 glass...
So, a tale of two rifles here :) - while chrono velocity does vary - accuracy (after dialed in) out to 800m (max we have access to) is identical and awesome for both rifles. I have been shooting 85gr -160gr handloads (and factory) out of each rifle - I honestly do not see advantage or a disadvantage in either rifle... Sounds as you are running 308, perhaps it (4") does make a difference in that caliber vs my swede. I do have a pair of R700 Classic rifles (also in 6.5x55) with stock 22" barrels and they are also very capable rigs...

If your current barrel is still accurate/has life, just keep shooting it as is. Spend the $ on ammo and practice.

Rebarrel with a quality barrel when it's not grouping anymore in a year or two.

spend $ on a quality trigger if you're just itching to drop $
