Really noob question

Re: Really noob question

Some people think so...mainly the companies that market them.

Dont get me wrong, they are great barrels (bartlein, krieger, etc are a few I know that make em) but the bottom line is get a barrel from a quality barrel maker and you will be fine. Plenty of accuracy records have been made with anything from 3-groove up to 6-groove. My last barrel purchase was a 4-groove Brux. Would have got a 5r if it was available at the time, but I dont think I am sacrificing anything with the 4-groove.

Only thing I would reccommend is get a cut-riffled barrel. My preference, but again, a quality button-rifled barrel will prob be fine as well. I and lots of others just prefer cut-rifled.

Good luck,
DT

Re: Really noob question

I got this off of the Krieger websight and it explains pretty much what I have read/seen posted here and elsewhere.

"The Obermeyer 5-R™ style rifling is simply a different style of rifling that has a more 'ramped', or angled transition from the groove to the land and back down from the land to the next groove. Our conventional 4 groove rifling has nearly parallel sides to the groove. The internet is full of information describing perceived benefits to the 5-R™ rifling over conventional styles, but most of this is comparing "apples to oranges" as they are usually comparing one manufacturer's "non 5-R™" to a different manufacturer's "5-R™" barrels. We have honestly seen no significant differences in accuracy or performance between the two styles of rifling when comparing our barrels."
I believe most of the top barrel makers have some kind of radious/canted land offering.
They are easier to clean.

Re: Really noob question

I dont believe fluting has anything to do with it button cutting is just easier and less costly because they pull the rifling button through the barrel if I understand it correctly. As far as 3 vs 4 vs 5 vs 6 groove the biggest debate I have seen is ease of cleaning, less grooves easier to clean. Some also say odd grooved rifling is better but not sure why. I have a 4 groove and it shoots well

Re: Really noob question

I did'nt intend to spur doubt.

My highest recorded rounds are through a Lother Walther which is from my knowledge is button rifled. Other then the reamer/chamber cut by gunsmith finger-printing my brass, this has been a very accurate rifle through time. Some folks can probably fill in the blanks here. The others are Wisconsin cut rifled with no issues. If you want flutes in any case, specify from manufacturer.

I believe twist rate is very forgiving and also end-rotation vs 5C and 5R is evident by reduced copper fouling in custom tigher bores. Stability/accuracy has not been a issue. There is allot of exterior aspects I would do differently or I have spent money to change vs the custom blank in previous end result. Ex; Barrel profile, length. In other words, I've had more issues with the OD choices by me vs. the ID choices in blind aquisition.
