Gunsmithing Recommended brake threading for Heavy Palma

Re: Recommended brake threading for Heavy Palma

3/4 would work good but I would probably go 5/8 out of your choices. Reason being is when barrel is used up the brake will have a better chance at fitting something else.

Doing them custom I would spec it at .725-24tpi. To get there I use .925 muzzle diameter - .200 for brake to shoulder on = .725"

I have gone as little as .062" for a brake shoulder but only on large caliber very light weight barrels like this one. This one is 1/2-24 fit to a .620" diameter .308 barrel. This left a .060" shoulder.

This is a brand new Weatherby Mark 5 Sporter in 300 Wby.

Re: Recommended brake threading for Heavy Palma

Hi Phil,
24 threads per inch is very common for brakes. It's just a good round number. Some people use 28 tpi. Neither 5/8-24 or 3/4-24 is a standard fastener size. No one stocks a tap or die this size. The diameter I select like .725" would be selected to give optimum strength and a good solid .100" to .125" shoulder to come up against. This helps keep the brake in time even after being removed and replaced many times.
I wonder how Remington ever settled on 1 1/16th 16tpi. Why not 1" or 1 1/8"?
