24 threads per inch is very common for brakes. It's just a good round number. Some people use 28 tpi. Neither 5/8-24 or 3/4-24 is a standard fastener size. No one stocks a tap or die this size. The diameter I select like .725" would be selected to give optimum strength and a good solid .100" to .125" shoulder to come up against. This helps keep the brake in time even after being removed and replaced many times.
I wonder how Remington ever settled on 1 1/16th 16tpi. Why not 1" or 1 1/8"?
