Is there any overwhelming consensus over where to mount a red dot (Aimpoint T1 for example)? I've seen them from one end of the rail to the other. I have mine centered over the bolt release, not by landmark, but just by me moving it back and forth until I felt a balance between useful image and eye relief. Other positions either made it too small or "off axis" or led me to start closing one eye. Obviously some positions are even fixed, like some piggy-backed or offset/side mounted brackets. Thoughts?

Re: Red dot positioning

Red dot sights have unlimited eye relief so its really up to you where you want to mount it. The reason why many people mount it at the forward end of the upper receiver is so they have space behind for a magnifier should the need arise to mount one.

What he said. I mount mine where ever it feels comfortable for me. No set rule as to where they have to be mounted.

I have a couple T1s on M4s and they are all mounted forward enough so that I can attach my AMPT 3x or PVS14s behind it.

Thanks.... That's kinda what I thought

Re: Red dot positioning

So in the end it boils down to where you like to have it.

Personally, I like it right over the gap between the upper and the barrel, if you have a monolithic rail. But you really have to decide what works for you.
