Reduced Recoil?

I wad wondering if anyone had any luck with reduced recoil loads in 300 PRC. I have noticed that since my shoulder surgery the full power loads are starting to cause a flinch response. My 308 and my 30-06 even with the hottest loads does not seem to bother me but the PRC really seems to irritate it. Which sucks since I just got my new Origin build from PVA.

Muzzle brake + weight. Those are the most effective means that I know of to reduce recoil.

Otherwise, by the time you've neutered the 300 PRC to get to your .308 and .30-06 recoil levels... you might as well be shooting a .308 or .30-06. I think that one of the big selling points of a .30 magnum is being able to cut wind calls by 30-40% (or more) from your 6 and 6.5 mms. But when you've lightened the bullet and charge to 'reduced power' levels, you're back in 6 and 6.5 mm wind call territory.

The tradeoff of course will be report and concussion. I wear double ear pro most of the time anyway, and recommend it.

Best of luck man.

Weights are a real good idea, and you can take them off when going hunting since you won't be doing a lot of shooting. Also maybe something like a Limbsaver recoil pad, or the wearable shoulder recoil pads for target sessions. Plus, of course the best-rated brake you can find.

300 win mag and up have a stout recoil from the bench.

Since you hunt, have you used shooting sticks and shot the rifle standing?

When standing it's easier for you to move with the gun.

Shooting .338 win mag from the bench in my hunting rifle (no brake) is a lot.

Standing it's not too bad.

For bench, as others said, add weight.

Add a rail and 4-14 pounds of brass weights to the rail under the gun.

4-14lbs… I like your style

So long as the neck thickness is the same. I necked down 308 to 708 then had to turn the necks for clearance.

I suppose one could definitely end up that way, depending on reamer and perhaps brass thickness.

Zero issue with my Manson reamer at .319. My loaded rounds come to .313. Fired cases measure .318.

I agree with @vh20

I have a 7 PRC, not a 300 PRC. So, the recoil of mine is not as bad as that or even a .300 Win Mag. But it is still significant. So, I have the slip-on Airtech since it in a chassis and those have hard rubber and it hurts.

So, if the idea is to have the 300 PRC be a hunting rifle, presumably for western elk and mule deer hunts, I would say muzzle brake and soft pad or shooters pad. They do make one rated for magnums.

I wear double ear protection at the range. I wear cans when hunting.

Crazy idea....don't shoot it. Shoot milder cartridges. Or add a ton of weight to the gun. Recoil is measured in ft lbs of energy. The same cartridge with a gun that weighs twice as much has half the recoil.

I doubt whatever your doing can't be done with a much smaller and less punishing round.

I tried some 178 ELDs and 180 TMKs at 2750-2800. Those were MUCH more mild than the 225s and relatively easy to shoot. Weirdly still more recoil than the same load in 308 Win. That being said, totally manageable for the 24rd string I shot today. Easy on the brass as well.

That’s a little weird, unless it’s due to the larger powder charge but the same speed and projectile should be similar enough in the recoil impulse.
