Researching optics and not finding any general discussions of "moderate" priced optics, except for a case by case bases which tend to lead to more questions. In particular with the optical quality and adjustment tracking (not shooting for a day job as LEO or military so will just be range and field shooting).

Have limited experiences in the group in Indiana besides with Leupolds and Nightforce, however, starting to think that many of the products form Vortex and Sightron might be a better fit than I expected plus lower cost than either the Nightforce or Leupold Mk4s.

Would appreciate any links to directions to the better discussions that I have missed, or add your comments here.

Of course the discussion will also tend to separate into three general power ranges and usage:
- Low Power Optics of nominal 1 to 4 power
Learned a lot for a start after my questions here: http://www.snipershide.com/forum/ubbthre...078#Post3000078
- Intermediate Power Optics - with a low power of 2 to 3
This range also tends to cover large game hunting scopes
- Moderate Power Optics - with a low power of 4 to 6

For many of us that like shooting a few too many different rifles, run into the issue of finding the best bang for the buck on optics. In the old days (a dozen years ago before finding here and similar) was easy, just purchased a used Leupold when it came through the local store (not many tactical scopes but lots of optics traded in the spring and summer for shotguns). Now days if one has one or two primary rifles then going for a nicer optics is at times a little easier (i.e. I like the Nightforce NXS 5.5x22 on the TRG42 in 338LM and the Leupy Mk4 4.5x14 is working out on the PSS after "borrowing" from the M82A1, but a better choice could maybe have been made), but when buying another scope for a rifle that may or may not work out, one thinks a little more about dropping one to two grand for a scope and more about what type scope one can get that works good enough for the time being and would make a good future project scope if the current rifle does not work out (at the moment my project scope is an old Leupold VarXII 6x18 that is showing it's age).

Once one gets out side the "low cost" scope of several hundred, one has to decide where they wish to stop before just giving up and spending the $1500 for a "nice" but not great scope. See listing at end, realizing there is a lot of gray area between each group.
- Low cost scopes for under ~ $400 ($350 in the one thread)
- Moderate cost scopes for $500 to near $1K - (i.e. Vortex and Sightron)
- "Common" High End Scopes for above $1K to $2K (i.e. Leupold Mk4, Nightforce NXS etc.)
- "Very Nice" High End Scopes (i.e. US Optics, S&B etc.)

Re: References on Gen Purpose Moderate Priced Optics

in my experiance its hard to find a low pricec scope that tracks well.

once you get into the moderate priced scopes you have alot more options and far as a scope that tracks

A 3x9 Nikon Buckmaster can be had for $260 and I have shot my 308 out to 1200 yards with it. It has 80 moa of vertical adjustment. Enough to shoot pretty far out. Glass is good, target was clear at 1200 yards. Seemed to track fine.

Re: References on Gen Purpose Moderate Priced Optics

Thanks, had read ILya site a year or two ago and was one of the factors that got me thinking (thanks for the links had not been back for a long time).

Have looked at some of Nikon scopes in the past, however, the mil dot versions had fairly thick cross hair (ok for fast shooting a little larger than the Nighforce for shooting at a distance) and limited vertical travel. Ended up with a used Leupold VarXIII 6.5x20 EFR instead (limited vertical travel and not ranging but worked fine on the heavy barrel 223) as was a tiny bit clearer (reading street signs at 400 yards was the best test at the store) and being used lower cost initially and should be able to resell with in 10% of what I paid later.

Some of the Vortex and Sightron look interesting, have looked through the low end SS and for the money were not bad, but could ask for more (then again these were the $300 ones).

Appreciate the inputs, in particular the comparison between the under $400 scopes and the under $800 scopes.

Re: References on Gen Purpose Moderate Priced Optics

I ended up thinning down the herd by getting rid of all the ho-hum rifles, pistols and shotguns that were lying around collecting dust for years. Then I took the money and bought decent scopes for the few nice custom rifles I had left.

From what I've read the Weaver 3-10 and Bushnell 3200 10X are nice $300 scopes. I haven't owned them though. Later this year SWFA is supposed to come out with their fixed power Super Sniper scopes with mil turrets and modern mil reticles. As far as I'm concerned there won't be anything on the market near as good a value than the new SS for the price based on the mil/moa I've owned before.

The best value I've seen as far as a used FFP scope is the Bushnell tactical 3-12x44. You can get them for between $500-600 if you're patient.

I think I'd rather have a Vortex PST 6-24 if I were to spend $700-$900 on a scope. Warranty, reticle, zero stop, elevation travel make the difference for me.

Bushnell HDMR or SS 5-20 for $1600 retail price range. They can be had used for $1200 or so.

Choose the features you want the most on the high end scopes. They are all pretty good.

Re: References on Gen Purpose Moderate Priced Optics

For discussion, how much difference in optical quality (which is subjective ;-) between the Vortex PST 6-24 and the Bushnell Elite 4200 6-24 which I have used on friends rifles?

Thanks
