I've had my 40X for several years now. I've been having an intermittent issue with light strikes which cause a failure to fire. I'd say it's in the 3%-4% of the rounds fired range. I shoot Wolf Match Target exclusively through this rifle.

I also noticed after having the rifle for awhile that the firing pin appears to have been repaired at some point. You can see where it was brazed, I suspect it may have been broken off.

Just curious is this is something others have experienced or what I might try to rectify the situation. When looking at the fired cases you can tell that they are either being struck with varying amounts of force or the casings are not consistent in their hardness. I'm thinking that consistent strikes may improve the accuracy potential. It shoots very well as it is but if it could be further improved I'm all for it.

If you take the bolt out and decock the shroud, How close does the firing pin come to being flush with the end of the bolt?

Have you considered a heavier firing pin spring?

Took a few pictures. Here is the firing pin where I believe it has been reattached.

Here's a pic of the firing pin protrusion with the bolt decocked:

I think you may be on to something concerning the firing pin spring. Here are two pictures to demonstrate that with the bolt decocked there is no tension pushing the firing pin forward in the shroud (at least not at full extension). The firing pin can be moved between these two extremes very easily.

Can you still find replacement springs for these? Last time I was checking for parts they weren't readily available.

Thanks for the help

SDWhilwind gave me this number (812-945-0480) for Wendall @ Out back Gun Parts when I was looking for some parts. Call after 10:00AM CST.

You might also try PT&G, they made the replacement bolt for my barreled action. I don't know if they will sell pieces or just complete bolts.

I would be more concerned with the length of the protrusion.

If there is too much gap between the tip and the barrel face you won't get full compression of the case.

The firing pin should come to but not past the end of the bolt face.

Would you happen to have any contact information?

Re: Rem 40X light primer strikes

That's not a factory point on the firing pin and the factory pins are silver soldered not brazed so my guess is the whole pin was replaces at some point. It may be easier to replace the whole striker with a new pin installed. You can install a new spring at the same time when the bolts apart.
