I have my rem 700 aac-sd 20" with a 1-10" twist rifle build ready to work up a loads and would like suggestions where to start. A buddy and I have a rcbs reloader, dies, etc heading our way. I just bought 100 unprimed lapua brass, 100 sierra matchkings in 175 gr, federal large rifle primers, and thinking about the imr powders or re-15 since I can't find varget anywhere….. any suggestions on what powder I should get, what how many grains per charge I should begin with, and any other words of advice for a complete newby to all of this… My goal is to have a rifle that I can shoot with decent consistency at times over 1000yds ---- I have likely many months till my suppressor shows up but eventually that will be on this rifle also- Alright, thanks for your time. Shoot long and straight

I would suggest IMR 4064 for loading .308 loads. As for how much to load, please consult your reloading guides, Lyman, Sierra, Hornady, Lee, etc. for the correct charges.

IM listening in here as well. I have the same exact rifle. Im pretty happy with the factory loads in 175 smk but want to start loading some of my own as well.

Lots of good powders for .308. I4064, I4895, H4895, H414, MR-2000, CFE223, Ramshot TAC, IMR 8208 XBR come to mind. IIRC Federal GMM 175 has been determined to use 41.7 gr IMR 4064, and I've seen 4064 in stock recently, unlike practically all the others I mentioned.

I found a good load with a 185 Berger OTM with 46.5 2000 mr , lapua brass , fgm210. 2.850 COAL. Also got a REALLY good load with 44.3 IMR 4064 and a 168 smk at 2.231 to the ogive (2.820) lapua brass , fed210's.

I suggest you don't try to turn a 20" 308 into a 300 Magnum. There's no point.

I've read IMR 4895 works great with the 175. I just loaded up 40 for my AAC-SD as well, 42-44.5 gr of varget (going up .5 grains) waiting to see how that goes

y'all have been much more than helpful. Its all new to me so I realize I have a lot of reading ahead but I just wanted to have a place to start. All the info out there can be quite overwhelming to say the least. Thanks for putting up with me and thanks for your time and responses

My go to load for my M700 with a 19" barrel is Federal brass, Fed 210M primer, 42.5 gr IMR 4064, SMK 175, 2.83 OAL. I think you'll find a sweet spot somewhere between 41.5 and 42.5 gr 4064. 4064 is in stock at a number of places right now. Do yourself a favor and buy at least one 8 lb jug so you're not switching lots that often. Stay away from the 168 SMK. It was designed to do 600 yds. It'll shoot out to 1200 (been there, done that), but it does unpredictable stuff as is goes subsonic. Just invest in a couple of 500 count boxes of the 175 SMK or 178 AMAX.

As always, reduce loads by 10% and work up and don't push it to hard. If you want to shoot past 800 yds with repeatability, get a 300 WM. You'll be happier with the results. I don't put glass with magnification higher than 15x on my 308's because it'll suck you in to doing things that are beyond the rounds capability. My 300 WM is for 800-1300.

I hear y'all on the .308 not being the ideal long range shooter. I guess I should clarify my goals…. I went and shot my buddies suppressed tikka t3 tactical with a tremor 2 reticle and was hitting steel at 977 meters on my second shot. Most of the afternoon we were at 750meters and in but we finally stepped out where I could only see the steel target through the scope. Since the furthest I had ever played with a rifle was 400yds on purpose this blew my mind that I was able to shoot at this distance. So began the search for a build where I could shoot large steel targets and hear the bing sound :) Thats all I hope to accomplish at those long distances with this rifle. I want a rifle that shoot sub moa and that has the capability to help me have fun on the range from time to time and possibly take a few critters as well.

You should find a node with lapua and varget w/175's at 43-43.2 and 44-44.2 and velocity should be 2490ish and 2550ish.

thechristianbear2001 IMR4064 is good, first node should be around 42 grains for laupa, winchester a couple tenths more and FC a couple less with the 175. I have not explored where the next one up from that is but suspect one grain more. 41.7 withold FC brass put me at 2412fps... I have also used IMR8208, ARcomp and H4895 but dont recall the charges. By far Varget is my fav... when it can be found.

Rem 700 aac-sd 20" 1:10 twist 20" barrel reload???

Found varget yesterday in New Mexico ... Found a node at 43.2 and 44.2 both groups were under .75 with the 43.2 being slightly better

Also found a node with the win 760 at 48.0 ...

Rem 700 aac-sd 20" 1:10 twist 20" barrel reload???

I shot out to 1400 yds today at some 24" targets. Started at 800yds - then 975, then 1200, and finally 1400yds. Those varget loaded pills help me hit the 1400 yd target. Took a few shots to walk it in but on the fourth shot it rung--- 1200 wasn't bad and had 4 shots hit consecutively- found out the w760 stuff doesn't do well at much past 800 yds :(

Soooo stinkin pumped. I built this rifle hoping I could hit a target past 1000 ever once in awhile. We had a cool afternoon with little wind. Fun stuff

RL 15 and 4064 should serve you well. I was using the same rifle with 178 AMAX and pushing them hard at 2650+ fps. Keep in mind I live at 6500ft and routinely shoot at 8000+. Temps here in colorado tend to stay low as well as humidity.

I used LC match brass for pretty much everything.
