Do to a case that did not seal I am going to have to rebuild 2 Rem 700p SA's. One is a 308 and the other is a custom 22-250. Since i am going to have to re-barrel I was wondering what everyone thought on barrel twist and rate as wll as barrel length.

Re: Rem 700 build

CaptRob,

I will chime in on the .308. Depending on what what the rifle will be used for, type of rifling, hand loading vs factory ammo, grain projectile, and other possible factors there may be more specific choices. Generally, a 11.25 twist or 12 twist is very common. 18-24 inch barrels. Barrel contour will also have to be decided. If you are looking for specific info, you will need to plug in some more factors. I have a 26" 1 in 12 factory Remington SPS varmint that I cut down to 20" and recrowned. I shoot 168 grain Federal match ammo, and Hornaday 150 grain SST. It shoots both very well. I have one rifle for everything from hunting to target shooting. Its light fast and very likable. I had a factory Remington 700P at one time that was cut down to 24" with the same rifling. I like the 20" better.

BC I hand load all my ammo and I would like the 308 to be capable of 1000 yard shooting. Right now I am leaning towards a 24" 5R barrel with a 11.25 rate and a #7 or #8 contour, but the 1-10 twist rate sounds good also since I will probably never shoot anything lighter than a 168gr.

Re: Rem 700 build

With the 308 it almost doesn't matter, 10-12 twist, If you plan on shooting 190-208 grain bullets 10 twist would be a better choice. Personally I'd choose 155.5's with a 11 twist and a 22" barrel. Don't try to make a 308 what it isn't, otherwise it's better to pick a different chambering. Keep it loaded to moderate levels and enjoy long barrel life.

22-250, Now you have a opportunity to turn a standard varmint rifle into a excellent low recoiling long range rig/varmint rifle via heavier high BC bullets. 8 twist would work great for bullets like Hornady 75-80 grain Amax. With a 26" barrel 3200-3300 is doable.
