I just bought a Rem 7000 VTR for a gift for my father, when i go visit him. I went to go handle it and make sure everything was working. I loaded the bullets and pushed the bolt forward and it makes a god awful scratching sound, upon ejecting the round there is a scratch on the casing from where I presume the rifle etched into it. I'm not a big bolt action person, only fired used ones that have been polished up. Is this normal for this to happen for a new bolt rifle? I was going to call a gunsmith to smooth it down and make it quieter. This is a hunting rifle, and my father is a big "don't put a bullet in the chamber until your ready to shoot" attitude. The sound would obviously run off game.

Thanks ahead of time.

Re: Rem 700 loading problem

research around on here a little bit. This is a pretty common occurrence with new production Remington rifles. With mine it eased out after a lot of dry firing, but it was still there.

So what I did was take apart the rifle, and remove the magazine box. On the front of it, the loading section with the "U", check it for burrs at the top of the "U". That is what was scratching mine up really really badly. File those down and it will smooth out a lot.
