First post, great site.

Going to get a AAC-SD soon and will be using it for hunting only. Big hogs and deer in Texas.

Max shots around 300 yards or less, sometimes a lot less

What are some of the hunting loads you guys have had good groups with? Really looking for factory loads.

Thanks!

If you're sticking to factory ammo for Texas whitetail and hogs, I've had really good luck with Hornady 150 grain soft points. Not the newest or sexiest load, but they flat work. I killed a hand full of hogs and deer with them before I started reloading. If you're staying under 300 yards that's really all you need in my opinion. The other nice thing is they won't break the bank either.

I dropped 2 deer this year, one with my 308 GAP, and the other with my brother in-laws 700SPS AAC 308. Both were with unfired winchester brass, 43 grains of varget, and 200 grain partitions. Both deer were almost instant kills. Obviosly good penetration but did not tear up the meat too bad. I will use these next year also.

This might sound unlikely, but the first box of ammo I shot through mine was Federal Power-Shok 180 gr. soft point (pretty much the only thing my local gun shop had at the time) and it grouped amazingly well. Less than 1\2" at 100 yards and even one group around 1\2" at 200.

I have since bought another box to see if it was a fluke or if maybe the stuff really is that consistent. Hopefully I'll get some results soon.

I have shot a bunch of deer with the Federal Classic 150 grn softpoint .30-06 load (blue & silver box) in northern Minnesota including one real heavyweight (around 300 lbs). Bullet performance was generally good. One buck shot at 25 yds went down in his tracks. Caliber sized entry hole and .5 to .75" exit hole, indicating bullet did not blow up at high velocity. Had exit holes on all deer except the largest buck, where bullet broke rib on entering, traveled through vitals then deflected off inside opposite shoulder bone veering up into neck. Found bullet behind ear.

Also, if you're shooting a .30-06 I highly recommend steering clear of the Remington 150 grn Corelock softpoint as I have seen nothing but awful bullet performance on deer less than 100 yds away. Bullets consistently blow-up, creating large shallow entry wounds with hardly any penetration. Several deer required follow-up shots to put them out of their misery.
