The older Winchester target rifles and the Remington 40X repeaters in 7.62, among other rifles, were clip-slotted. I understand that on a military rifle like a Mauser or a Springfield this would be for stripper clips. My question is, what was the clip-slotting used for on the old target rifles? If it was for stripper clips, then what kinds of clips were used on a Winchester Model 70 or a Remington 40X?
