I know of a guy trying to sell a rifle as described in the subject line and is advertising it as a true 1000yd bolt gun. I've shot F T/R with my own purpose built bolt gun and I have my own beliefs as to whether or not this 16" stick is capable at 1000yds. What are your thoughts on this rifle. Be as brutally honest as you want. I would greatly appreciate any and all opinions.

Thanks

A 308 can get to 1000 yds, but you need to use the right bullet and have a longer barrel. 155s get you there but wind will make it challenging to hit the target, but probably not with a 16" barrel. Ask him what rounds he is using and what they chronographed at; they most likely hit the transonic region before 1000 yds. A 16" barrel is better suited inside 600 yds. On second thought, since the guy is probably full of nonsense claiming his 16" shorty barrel 308 is a 1000 yd gun, you will want to be skeptical of any other information he provides.

Hope this helps.

The guy just told me 1/4MOA at 750 yards. And yes, I'm skeptical. Actually, I know that he's outright lying. I just wanted to make sure that there wasn't some sort of magical load combination that I wasn't aware of. I also asked him what the barrel's twist rate was (after posting my OP) and his response was "Hart Barrel 16" 7 Contour." This guy is FOS and is trying to get himself out of the hole that he dug by dumping a ton of money into a custom built rifle and ruining it by chopping off the barrel. Just trying to unload it onto someone else.

It is possible with careful planning. I watched Travis Haley connect at 1 mile with an 18" gas gun that I belive was chambered in .308 on the Magpul Dynamics Long Range video. Of course he is an expert shooter and was being mentored by an even more expert shooter, but it seems possible with the correct fundamentals.

I have that same dvd set. Yes, I realize that it can be done. However, this guy is the farthest thing from being an expert. Also, his latest claim he uses 175gr PRVI factory loads and is still claiming that his twist ratio is 7 Contour. smh

1000 yards can be done with a 16" barrel 308, but not with PRVI 175 grain ammo. Their 175 FMJBT has some consistency issues and doesn't group for shit. Out of a short barrel, the velocity isn't going to be there to get the lighter bullets out to 1000. You need to anticipate the bullet going subsonic before reaching the target. That means big, heavy bullets that can transition into subsonic trajectory without destabilizing. I've had pretty decent results shooting 190 grain SMK and Nosler Custom Comps out to 1000 yards from a 16" 308 AR with a 1:11 twist barrel. I typically get about a 60% hit ratio on an 11X18 steel plate at that distance. It's not an ideal rifle for shooting that far, but it can do it with a fair degree of consistency. Having said that, I would not put the words "1000 yard rifle" in the title of a for sale thread if I were going to sell it. Realistically, it's more like an 800 yard rifle if you want reliable hits.

I recently had been rolling the idea around to chop my AAC-SD to 16". I tabled the thought knowing that in my 5R 20" I am barely able to be competitive on the 1000-1075 steel. I am pushing a 178 Amax at 2535fps and I have to really be driving to ring steel anywhere past 800. My AAC-SD 20" with a 175 SMK @ 2610 fps is about the same results. For a 1000 yard a 20" will get it done and a 24" even better.
If it sounds to good to be true.................. I would look for another rifle if I where you. You having built a F/TR rig should know how many rifles fail the test at longer ranges.
