First post, new to forum. Hopefully I'm not violating any rules, unbeknownst.

New to working on rifles in general. Have taken my 700 .308 to the range several times and decided I didn't like the stock trigger assembly so I am trying to install a Jewell Remington 700, 40X Custom Bench Rest.

My problem occurs with the Bolt Stop while fully seating the Bolt Stop Pin (pin in back):

The Sear Pin (front) is fully seated without contact to the Bolt Stop, Jewell trigger is secure and free to swing in place. The body of the trigger assembly fits tightly into the receiver but I assume this is to be expected. With the trigger in place, ready to receive the Bolt Stop Pin, the Bolt Stop runs up and down, returning naturally and without resistance. (HiRes pic here: http://imgur.com/iC3gg)

As soon as I begin seating the Bolt Stop Pin, the trigger settles in its final position it depresses the Bolt Stop. (HiRes pic here: http://imgur.com/YJWoX) It might be hard to see but if you reference the Sear pin you can see in the second picture it is no longer visible, covered by the bolt stop.

My feeling is the bolt release lever on the trigger assembly is pushing down on the Bolt Stop, not allowing it to return (I thought it might be the spring, but the pressure required by my finger to push the Bolt Stop into its resting position seems unreasonable).

Am I performing some action incorrectly? Has anyone heard of this happening with 700s and Jewells? Do I need to return the trigger? Can I file a small bit off the end of the bolt release lever arm that makes contact with the Bolt Stop in order to relieve some of this downward pressure?

From what I remember while removing the stock trigger assembly, this is NOT the natural resting position of the Bolt Stop Arm?

Thank you very much for any information.

Have a good evening all.

Re: Rem700 Jewell install Bolt Stop Problem

Well anyway, I ran the bolt in, the bolt stop functions and releases properly.

The front of the bolt stop, in it's resting position shows 50% of the hole in front (not sure what the hole is for) but everything appears to be functioning properly.

Advice appreciated.

Re: Rem700 Jewell install Bolt Stop Problem

Sorry but it sounded like you were upset you didn't get an answer right away.

I'm not a pro but I'll give my thoughts.

No. It does not look normal. Does the bolt work? Does it fire? Hard to say without having it in my hands. Give Jewell a call or this guy(http://www.greatscottshooters.com/trigger.htm).

I would send it back before filing on it and rendering it nonreturnable.

Re: Rem700 Jewell install Bolt Stop Problem

tweaked the end of the bolt release arm on the trigger with needle nose pliers. Only needed a fraction of a millimeter to get it to seat somewhere close to reasonable. I get a very nice positive-feedback "click" when the bolt goes into the receiver. Bolt is secure once in.

First time doing a trigger, the adjustment required was minuscule and made a big difference at the end of the long lever-arm of the Bolt Stop. Makes me think this is a common adjustment required.

No further advice required. No more problems with trigger installation regarding Bolt Stop on a 700.

Learning one step at a time.

Thanks for the clarification Patrick.

Re: Rem700 Jewell install Bolt Stop Problem

It's normal to have to tweak the bolt stop actuator piece on triggers as you install them.
You want it to settle into the corner of the notch on the 700 bolt stop so there is no binding as it lifts the bolt stop.
