I'am looking at buying either a 5R, LTR, or XCR in .223
It would be used mainly for my son and daughter to shoot
and, I'am sure it will be getting some upgrades dowm the road.
Yes, I have been using the search engine.
Just wanted a little poll. Or some input. Thanks

Re: Remington .223 need help deciding

I have the XCR Tactical Long Range, 223 cal. It's a nice gun and really likes the 69gr. SMK. My gun will shoot .5 or less with good handloads.

Re: Remington .223 need help deciding

also, you might look at the SPS Tactical. It is short that would be good for the kids and they would probably like the feel of the Hogue. No one really likes the Hogues because they are only pillar bedded and are not stiff enough to keep the forearm off the barrel while using a bi-pod. Mine touches the barrel but still shoots under .5 moa.. Mine is a 308

Just a thought

Re: Remington .223 need help deciding

I have an LTR. Shoots lights out. Shoots 50 gr Sierra BlitzKings really well,Hornady V-Max 55GR also and the Sierra 69 SMK great. I don't think you could go wrong with any of the weapons you mentioned.

Re: Remington .223 need help deciding

I have a PSS in 223,shoots the 52gr SMK's great, for kids though I would probably lean towards the SPS tactical or LTR, shorter barrel would be easier for them to maneuver with.

Re: Remington .223 need help deciding

Also, make sure you are cognizant of the barrel twists that you are needing. I have a 1:12 in my Remington 700 VS and I can go to 60 VMAX but that is about as high as I can go and still stabilize - I need a faster twist barrel to get into the 69 SMK's. If you can get a 1:9 you are good to go with most of the 223 family of bullets.

Re: Remington .223 need help deciding

I have a .223 suppressed that my now 10 y/o shoots. Believe it or not it stays in an AICS stock with all the spacers removed to shorten it for her and she runs in like a champ prone.

I'd probably do something like the LTR or SPS Tactical and try to get the stock shortened or replace it with an adjustable LOP.

Good Luck,

Re: Remington .223 need help deciding

Thanks for the information everyone. It is now a choice between
the LTR or the XCR.. I know the flutes will help them with the weight. Decisions, decisions

Re: Remington .223 need help deciding

I have the 5R my brother has the SPS and our shooting buddy has the XCR. All 3 ended up being about the same as far as accuracy is concerned with a slight edge going to the 5R.

The XCR had a problem with the stock from the factory (fluke) that was quickly fixed by Remington after we figured out what the problem was. The SPS stock was switched out right from the start with a B/C.

I doubt your kids would like the palm swell of the 5R but who knows. For the money the SPS is hard to beat.

Re: Remington .223 need help deciding

I've got a bull barreled Howa 1500 with thumbhole stock that shoots like an absolute laser. 1:12 twist limits me to lighter bullets but I am getting in the .4s with 50 grn V-Maxs over 25.4 and 25.5 grns of Benchmark with fired and new Lapua brass, respectively. This may be the best value rifle I ever purchased.

Re: Remington .223 need help deciding

You can't go wrong with the LTR - I've had one for two years now, and it shoots between .25 and .5 all day long at 100 yards. It's my go-to coyote gun for winter hunting - small, light, and deadly accurate. I don't think you can do better in terms of a .223 from Remington. The other models might be one or two hundred bucks cheaper, but the LTR comes in that fiberglass stock which I think is better than the stocks I've seen on the XCR or SPS...

Re: Remington .223 need help deciding

I do not know all the Rem line, but I can say that the VSSF is a great and accurate rifle. I have had several in 22-250 and 223. All would shoot like the best custom rifles I own. I also see little advantage of a McMillan stock over the one on the VSSF. I realize that most do, but for me I like the HS Precision stock. I am sure I have a dozen McMillans. They are fine, just not that much better. I do prefer the older one, but the new one is fine as well. JMO

Re: Remington .223 need help deciding

I bought my 10 year old Doughter an SPS Varmint .223 at Dicks that was on sale for $450. They might still be on sale this week yet.

Going to shorten it to 16.5" and thread if for my suppressor for her. I am going to order an adjustable length of pull stock for her and will have a new Varmint hunting partner next year.
