I just had a break put on my 5R 300 win mag . Did I make a mistake in doing so ? I'll be working up some loads this week but was wondering if anyone else had one and had a break installed if they maintained the accuracy ? Any info is welcome .

First off...it is BRAKE, not BREAK.

Second, why do people always asked if they have somehow F---ed something up AFTER they have already done it? Reason dicates that it is better to ASK FIRST before actually doing if you have concerns about the outcome!

Fortunately for you, as long as the brake was installed by a competent gunsmith that understands the proper threading of a barrel, concentricity of the threads to the bore, proper timing of the brake, etc., then you shouldn't have any difficulties. Routinely, a quality brake can actually improve accuracy (albeit slightly).

I'm not an expert, but i was looking into the exact same brake for the same rifle (300 win mag w/sendero) and they said, the only way accuracy could be affected, is if your smith didn't open the brake up evenly. If it's uneven, the pressure would be different from one side to the other and would cause an inaccuracy.

Thanks , I did ask around prior to doing it and it was done by a reputable smith . I appologize for upsetting you but I,m just paranoid I guess . I am new to the long distance routine and pardon the spelling of brake . Thanks for the info and I will be off to test loads Wed in the AM .

I have 3 300WM's,

#1 GA Precision 300WM Has Badger break GAP install when built. I have shot it with and without and no POI change but you can tell a helluva diff with the recoil. No accuracy loss

#2 Kimber Advanced Tactical Has VIAS break installed by local smith. No POI shift. Accuracy still the same.

#3 Rem Sendero (older blued one) Ops Inc break unknown installer. No POI change and no accuracy loss.

I have however had POI loss with an AR15 with birdcage. Lower group is no A2 hider, upper group has A2 hider. I would expect the reason for this would be a run of the mill machined part that is put out PDQ versus a well machined break.

I'm not upset in the least. No worries, bro. I just find it hilarious that folks ask if something is a bad idea or ill-advised after they have already done it!! It happens around here at least a couple times a month. Same thing for people who buy firearms and then ask if they made a good decision or if they should have bought something else better suited to their purposes. Backassward thinking at its finest (and proving Darwin's point one question at a time)!

Glad you checked into the brake issue before you jumped in with both feet. You should be fine with a good install job from Mark at SAC and the APA brake. Be sure to post results of your load development once you get done later in the week. The 5R 300WM rifles are good shooters from my experience...I'm sure you will be pleased with your results!

I put a brake on a ar once just for the hell of it. I shot a mag threw it and took it off. Them fuckers are loud. It would make people next to ya get up and move. Cant imagine what a 300 wm would be like. cant be worse than this though.

I got my very first brake job on a 7 Rem Mag Douglas barrel a couple of months ago. It's shooting some good groups so far, and it kicks about like my 243's.
With foam plugs AND muffs it still jars the earth every time I touch it off.
I've got a slick little thread protector to thread on the barrel when I take it hunting.
