Hey everyone, just trying to get yall's opinion as to if this would be a good base rifle to build off of..first off, its not going to be a complete custom build..more of a fine tuning.. im going to be keeping the stock and barrel. I just completed a long range AR build and i thought i would start a bolt gun. Eventually i would love to have a GAP rifle but for now, im on a budget. I already have a jewell trigger and larue 20moa rail for a rem short action so i figuered the 5r would be a good route. I already contacted a local well known gunsmith a got prices for bedding and trueing action, oversized bolt knob, threading barrel, and cerakoting barrel and action (not bolt).. it would be right at $700. I figure with that rifle and work done to it, combined with some decent glass,it would be a good shooting rifle.. does this sound like a good idea? or is there a better route that yall would recommend? thanks for any input.

Re: Remington 700 5r .308??

They're good to go, though I wasn't the biggest fan of the HS Precision it came with. The stock can be sold off for a fair bit of cash I hear. I'll probably be putting mine up soon.

I'd shoot before truing action, and there is already a 20" threaded 5R out there, that's the one I ended up picking up.

I have yet to have the urge to change my bolt knob, but I've only had this gun for like 3 months.

Re: Remington 700 5r .308??

thanks..i have heard of people getting pretty good money for the factory stocks.. its something i will have to try out and see how i like it.. I have looked at the 20" threaded version but i like the idea of the 24". Realistically,Im sure the 20" would be more than adequate for the distances I will regularly shoot, however, I would prefer the barrel to be threaded by a gunsmith ensuring a good straight thread for my AAC cyclone.

There used to be an old marketing slogan "Try it, You'll Like it!"

Same applies to the 700 5-R Milspec. I've had one for just under 4 years now and it's great. Only work I did out of choice, not necessity was to replace the trigger with a Timney. Didn't like the adjusting screw for the trigger pull rubbing on the top of my finger. I've also bedded the action in the aluminum action block that H-S Precision uses. It was not contacting the action uniformly but a light skim coat of Devcon 10110 did the trick. Groups were still in the .250" or less category but they stayed there longer. Before, as the rifle heated up they'd spread out a little.

This rifle shoots regular 3/4" groups at 300 yards and hasn't been into a shop yet. Likes 168 gr and 175 gr Nosler Custom Comp's real well but for some reason shoots like excrement with the Sierra's in the same type and weight.

Not only is the rifle accurate, the 5-R hammered rifling is extremely easy to clean. Also distorts the bullet less for better long range accuracy.

Re: Remington 700 5r .308??

Man Deadshot, after reading your post I am now a little worried.

I pulled the trigger on a 20" 5r that should be here early next week. I am not able to handload and have all plans of shooting 168 federal gold metal match. They shot well out of my sps aac and I was able to use federal 165 gamekings with out having to change zero for hunting.

You really can't go wrong with the 5r. I have had mine for 2 years now and it shoot's awesome. I run the 175's through mine.

Re: Remington 700 5r .308??

Get one. I love mine, it's a consistent .5 MOA gun with the right load. I've had best results with 175 SMKs and 175 Nosler CCs with RE-15 and IMR 4064 respectively.

The stock is OK, however, I am looking at upgrading when the funds become available.

I would second the advice on waiting to see how it shoots before you have the action trued, there is a pretty good chance it won't need it.

I have the same gun the 20" also has a 1-10 twist too

Re: Remington 700 5r .308??

You won't go wrong with the 5R. I wouldn't true the action unless you are going for a different barrel; consider a muzzle break and/or a CDiPrecision bottom metal instal instead.

For me, 178gr Hornday AMAX with 44.5gr of Varget is very nice.

Re: Remington 700 5r .308??

5R is a great rifle....I went with the 24" barrel. It is a tack driver right out of the box. Before you do anything to it, take it out and shoot it......you will like yours' too!!!

1 in 11.25. Although i have heard some out of the normal 5Rs having a 1 in 10 though. </div></div>

I thought the 1 in 10 was just on the .300 win mag.

I did a fair share or research and I would have a 20" threaded .308 5r if I didn't end up running into good deals on a .300 5r and a 18" .308 FN PBR at the same time . . . so I couldn't resist myself and bought those.

I've just been doing minor plinking with random glass and ammo that I have laying around until I have the cash for better stuff, so this could change with quality glass and ammo, but the 5r seems to be a hair more accurate at this point. GET IT!
