I have been looking at some different rem 700 short actions for a 20BR build i am thinking of doing. Anyway while looking at a few different rem 700 actions i saw something that i dont ever recall noticing before. The rifle was a 222rem. the receiver was shaped a bit different were the back (closest to the butt stock) scope mount goes. It looks like the receiver is cut out a bit. Actually its cut square quite a bit, and the scope mount area looks more flat. All my rem 700 actions are one solid piece of metal in this area, and more rounded. I hope i am explaining this properly. whats the idea behind the cut out square area under or in front of the back scope mounting area? Lee

Or it's just an old one. They look like they have a clip slot, but I seem to remember hearing it was done for manufacturing reasons.

That's a 721 on top, and a 722 on bottom. I have an older 700 and it's identical to the 721. This particular 722 has had the right portion of the rear bridge milled away to make the ejection port longer, but otherwise it would have been the same as the 721.
