I am having very bad feeding issues with my 700 .308. It has the stock remington detachable magazine system on it and it is feeding horribly. Everytime I fire the weapon, extract the casing, then try to push the bolt back in it will get stuck and the cartridge will not find itself up the feed ramp. Is that a magazine issue? Do these remington magazines have a bad reputation? Have any of you guys heard of anything like this on the sps dm models? I have no idea what I am doing and need help to figure out why it is doing this.

Re: Remington 700 feed problems

Take it back apart and make sure the box aligned correctly.

It occasionally happens if you are off on the box.

My Winchester had this problem when I put a custom wood stock on it with no bottom metal...

Re: Remington 700 feed problems

When the 260 first came out in stainless it had the DBM. Bought one thinking it would be the cat's a**, well it was for accuracy but that sumbitch ALWAYS had feeding issues. Usually(giving it some credit) it would feed the first round but never did it ever feed a full mag without at least 1 f*ckup per mag. Couldn't convert it to a standard BDL because them genius bastards eliminated feed rails on the DBM model. Wife used it for deer and I shot it only to sight in, load work etc. When that cheating whore left(no, I am not bitter anymore) so went the 260 on GB!!!! Liked the caliber but damn sure didn't like that rifle, for several reasons at the end!!!!!

Edit to add that... It had sat around and I never got around to shooting/loading for it for a yr or so. Then found the repeated issue. Remington told me it was "out of warranty" and I could send it to Jack First in Rapid City, SD(one of their repair/service centers) but it would not be under warranty. Recommended I buy "a new mag first"!!!! The mentioned repair center charged like $60 minimum and $60/hr to just look at it so I bought a new mag summer prior to above mentioned 'wife' leaving and she didn't get a license that fall and I didn't have any desire to fix it afterwards. I got the impression they really didn't care what I did with it nor what the problem was. Probably tired of the phone calls about their lousy mag setup!!!

Re: Remington 700 feed problems

Well sounds like I am not the only one who has or am having problems. I suppose that the dbm is the culprit here. I guess I will be buying another dbm system and sending remington a well worded letter.

Re: Remington 700 feed problems

Had a similar problem with 700 VS in 308 mfg. in the mid 90's but it didn't have a box magazine. I never noticed it really until I got a new stock with a magazine and jacked a few rounds thru it. When I shot it before I always loaded one round at a time so didn't know anything was wrong. The nose and top of the bullet was hitting the top of the chamber while going up the feed ramp and putting some bad chatter marks on the bullet. I put the old HS stock back on and it did the same thing, so it wasn't the new stock, bottom metal or magazine. A gunsmith in Va. told me that it was probably the feed ramp needed to have a little smoothing out so I sanded it down very carefully until a round would load without hitting the top, I haven't shot the rifle since doing this but it loads easier and doesn't mark the bullet up anymore. I would look at the feed ramp real close.

Edit: here's photo's of rounds that fed from a factory HS stock and a custom stock with Badger bottom metal and AI magazine; I'm not a gun smith but these pic's show that something is not right with the factory work. Just my humble opion, I would look at the rifle itself before screwing around with magazines and stuff like that. I'm going to switch to Alpha mags myself because I think they are built to better tolerances and have not read any negative reports on them.

Re: Remington 700 feed problems

have a detachable mag with ai mag system, i had same deal tried all kinds of stuff just grab a 5 rnd detachable mag if your worried about the 10 round being too big, im sure theirs other ways of fixing it, the only way it would work is not useing pointes but round nose projectiles. i did the sanding, messing with the feed ramp and mag between the bottom metal. with the drop mag i can cycle action as fast as i can no hangups.

Re: Remington 700 feed problems

Is the bolt riding over top of the rounds feeding or hanging up as its going up the ramp & chambering ? It sounds like your magazine height is not where it should be or your mags might need tweaked.

I used CDI bottom metal & AI mags on my FN and needed to tweak the mags lips ever so slightly.

If the bolt is riding over the top it likely your magazine sitting low. You can raise the cartridge height by opening up the magazine feed lips SLIGHTLY. A crescent wrench (smooth jaws) works good for tweaking the lips.

Re: Remington 700 feed problems

That may be a very good possible cause. Now that I think about it that makes sense. Whenever the rare occasion the bolt does catch the cartridge it is most likely only catching it at the very top of it potentially causing the bullet to nose DOWN and get jammed below the feed ramp at the chamber. I guess no harm in trying
