Re: Remington 700, Need Advice
Sure, a new barrel is about 300, but since it is a remington, you must have a gunsmith install it.
A gunsmith will do the final chambering and set the headspace on a Remington.
Now, you COULD attack it in a piece by piece manner.
Buy a B&C light tactical stock for about 220 bucks. Install it and you will probably see an accuracy improvement.
Save up some money.
Decide what barrel you are going to want. I happen to be a fan of Lothar-Walther, but Shilen, Brux, Bartelein, Hart, douglas, McGowan etc... all make excellent barrels.
Order your barel, it will probably take about 6 weeks.
Cost for the barrel will probably be in the neighborhood of about 330 bucks.
Save up some more money.
Take it to a good gunsmith and have your new barrel installed. If you saved enough money, true the action and lap the lugs.
Your other options are to sell the current rifle and use the proceeds towards a new rifle at a higher cost or to just buy a new rifle alone.
You MIGHT be able to get 300 for your current rifle, add that to the 500 and you are pretty much in the 700P range, an excellent rifle with a very good stock.
A remington SPS tactical can be had for about 550 bucks from Buds, but you must pay the transfer fee, usually about 25-35 dollars. Then you will still need to invest in a better stock.
