Remington 700, Need Advice

Recently I have been considering getting a Savage 10 due to their excellent quality and low price range. But I now realized that a Remington 700 action alone goes for about $400. I happen to have a Remington 700 SPS youth chambered in .308 with a nice Rifle Basix trigger already installed. So my question is this: with a price range of about $500 where would my money be best spent to produce the most accurate gun possible. Remember, $500 is my max so please don't get carried away with too many mods, just the basics that will get my gun shooting great. Thanks everyone!

Re: Remington 700, Need Advice

I don't know the specs on the barrel that is in your youth model 700, but it may be less than optimal. That being said, a match barrel and chambering/installation is already just about out of your price range.

best option would probably be to sell your Remington 700 action. Then decide on a savage or Remington depending on future needs. Once the action sells you have about a $900 budget. If it were my money, I'd get a SPS tactical for $600, a Bell&Carlson light tactical stock for 200, skim bed it yourself for under $100 and drop in the rifle basix trigger you already have.

Or keep an eye in the for sale section here and you could prolly find a used
sps with mods, an LTR, or possibly a 5R milspec if you are lucky.

NO!!It will cost you more than you think. There is a little more to it than just buying a "Pre-Fit" Barrel.Customizing a Remmy ain't cheap esp if you do it half-assed.I would just buy the Savage and concentrate on some good glass.

Re: Remington 700, Need Advice

Sure, a new barrel is about 300, but since it is a remington, you must have a gunsmith install it.

A gunsmith will do the final chambering and set the headspace on a Remington.

Now, you COULD attack it in a piece by piece manner.

Buy a B&C light tactical stock for about 220 bucks. Install it and you will probably see an accuracy improvement.

Save up some money.
Decide what barrel you are going to want. I happen to be a fan of Lothar-Walther, but Shilen, Brux, Bartelein, Hart, douglas, McGowan etc... all make excellent barrels.
Order your barel, it will probably take about 6 weeks.

Cost for the barrel will probably be in the neighborhood of about 330 bucks.

Save up some more money.
Take it to a good gunsmith and have your new barrel installed. If you saved enough money, true the action and lap the lugs.

Your other options are to sell the current rifle and use the proceeds towards a new rifle at a higher cost or to just buy a new rifle alone.
You MIGHT be able to get 300 for your current rifle, add that to the 500 and you are pretty much in the 700P range, an excellent rifle with a very good stock.

A remington SPS tactical can be had for about 550 bucks from Buds, but you must pay the transfer fee, usually about 25-35 dollars. Then you will still need to invest in a better stock.

for 500 bucks you can get your action trued 150 shilen chrome moly barrel 150 and chambered and installed 150. Thats your 500 bucks. for 200 more you can have all this sitting in a B&C stock. not to bad and it should shoot .5" groups if you can steer it. Good luck! Lee

Re: Remington 700, Need Advice

wow, I see lots of advice here...

You have a solid rifle(SPS 308) that is a 1/2 MOA out of the box rifle. Currently the stock is an issue. Look for a PSS pull off stock, a VLS pull off stock or any of the Basic older Reminington pull offs from someone who upgraded to a McMillan, Manner's, et al. YOU can remove the rifle form the 'youth' stock and put it into the larger stock yourself. SImply evenly torque the two action bolts the same if you don't have the $65 for an inch pound torque wrench.
You should have about $350 left at this point. If your optics and mounting solutions are what you want, then that is g2g. Spend the money on ammunition and shoot. You may gain a little bit of acccuracy at range with truing the action and all that, but the bottom line is nothing will beat learning your rifle and shooting it well with practice

Re: Remington 700, Need Advice

Before you start sending it off for aftermarket barrels etc, be sure and try shooting it with some quality ammo. Factory barrels can shoot better then many people give them credit for. I purchased a remington 5r special which produced groups just as good as my TRGS and AIs.

Sometimes you can find a really good rifle with just the factory stuff.

Guys still beat my AW at the matches with factory rifles. Makes me feel horrible...

My vote is to sell the action here and buy a used remington PSS, SPS, or 5R stainless special.
