I have a Remington 700 Varmint Synthetic .308 that is factory stock that I am trying to adjust the trigger on. It is from 1998 or 1999. This is also my first attempt to adjust one of these triggers. I'll use the names of the screws as labeled on this web page.

When trying to remove the seals from the screws, I used a small knife to get the bulk off and then CLP to clean it up further. This worked for all the screws EXCEPT the Trigger Weight Screw. I cannot budge this screw. I tried soaking with Zippo lighter fluid as recommended in a topic on this site with no luck. (Soaking = squirting onto screw and letting it sit until evaporated, both front & back) Also, the screwdriver bits I have that are correct width are really too thin, thickness-wise, to fit the screw properly; they try to twist across the blade.

One thing I wondered, is if the Trigger Weight Screw is slightly bigger in diameter to prevent it from being removed. Could just be an optical illusion, though.

Any advice would be appreciated, and thanks in advance!

I use acetone. Most of the time, just holding a rag that is wet with the stuff is enough to do the job. If not, pour a bit in a glass dish and soak it a while.

Thank you for all the comments! I don't have a torch yet, but did have some acetone for something else. I filled a jalapeno jar with acetone and set the barreled action on two shooting bags with the trigger assembly hanging in the jar. I put a piece of cling wrap over it to minimize evaporation.

After about two hours and taking down a hedge, I checked out the screw and it DID come loose.
