What are the major differences between a Remington SPS Tactical and an SPS Tactical Varmint in a .308 caliber? I know that the Varmint comes with longer barrel which gives you a longer range effectiveness with the rifle but what seems like the better rifle to pick up for 500+ yard shooting for sport as well as competition?

Re: Remington 700 SPS Tac vs. SPS Varmint Tac

There is no "Varmint Tactical"

It is either a varmint or a tactical.

The tactical has a 20" the varmint has a 26" barrel.

Both have 1-12" twist rates unless you get the AAC-SD tactical model, which has a 1-10" twist.

All three come in a crappy stock that must be upgraded. This is how they keep the cost down.

A new stock can run anywhere from 220 bucks up to over a grand.

If it is to be strictly a range gun, the B&C fully adjustable stock would work very well for F-Class and such, about 440 bucks.

I think he may have been talking about the triangular barreled model with the stock brake.

Re: Remington 700 SPS Tac vs. SPS Varmint Tac

Right , the VTR, I stand corrected, though it is not an SPS model.

Just say no to the triangular barrel. It is more expensive and you still have to replace the stock.

An attractive alternative would be the VLS (varmint, laminated stock).
It is a 26" fluted stainless barrel, you should probably bed the action though. They go for about 770 or so, if memory serves (Buds Guns), the stock is a very nice laminated wood stock. A decent glass bed job and you would be set.

Re: Remington 700 SPS Tac vs. SPS Varmint Tac

Buy a 5r, don't need to replace the stock and obviously Better barrel. By the time you get through all the additional crap to make a SPS shoot well, you'll have spent more than a 5r.

Re: Remington 700 SPS Tac vs. SPS Varmint Tac

Barrel length is the only real difference; Stocks are both weak but passable for hunting season shooters... Precision shooters will choose to replace them.

About a month ago I decided to find out what 6" of barrel length would yield with identical loads fired in both of my Remington’s, one 20" tactical and one 26" varmint. Here is what I found, FWIW...

Remington SPS Tatical20"
175smk 44.5 varget load @ 2.825oal = 2550fps
155 lapua scenar varget 46.7 load @ 2.825 = 2750fps

Remington Varmint 26" same loads as above.
175 = 2645
155 = 2850

So in my rifles you gain 100 fps +/- a couple from those extra 6" of barrel. Only you can decide if its worth it.

A quickie search here or on google would be a good idea to answer this for you, but its basically a different kind of rifling that doesn't have traditional lands and grooves. People that like it swear up and down its better. People that don't like it swear its not as good.

Re: Remington 700 SPS Tac vs. SPS Varmint Tac

I think i may no what he is refering to.
About a year a go i saw multiple rem700 varmint tactical rifles for sale on gun broker, they were 700 varmints with 20in barrels and varmint stock. Also they were not marked tactical and they were selling them as special edition for 700.00, but he is probly not because he mentions the longer barrel. Ill check and see if they are still on gunbroker.

No now i could only find the VTR varmint tactical.
Im pretty sure they were not factory with the 20 in barrel which is probly why the extra cost was added in.
But that always struck me a funny how they were not marked tactical and were sold as special edition.

Re: Remington 700 SPS Tac vs. SPS Varmint Tac

I'm gonna have to push the AAC-SD. Just swapped a varmint .308 barrel and action out for an AAC-SD. Sold the varmint in the AAC-SD hogue stock.
I'm getting consistantly tighter groups with most loads i've played with, reloads and factory ammo. factory loads have been, hornady 168gr amax, hornady 168gr hpbt, hornady 178gr bthp (neither rifle liked this one).
My reloads have been hornady brass, cci primer, varget (different charges), 175gr nosler cc, 168 amax, 178 amax

Have not got the AAC-SD past 300yds yet but hoping for next week.

Never thought the 6" barrel length diff would be that big a deal but man the 20" handy.

Never shot either of these in the factory stock though.
