So I picked up a remington 700 police (wedding gift from my best man!) and am pleasantly surprised by my first range day with it. Came in an hs precision stock so it's aluminum bedded and reinforced. Prolly not changing it for awhile, if at all. My question is should I bed the recoil lug? Here's the rifle after my basic mods to make it shoot able and the grouping with Federal 168gr gold

Shots were taken at 100yds shooting bipod and rear bagged with the factory trigger set at about 4.5lbs
Let me know as it won't take that much work and I'm insure about how substantial the gains will be by tightening up that recoil lug spacing.

I would not touch it for now. If you are going to hand load then spend the time working up a good load to see what the rifle is capable of first. If you are not loading for it then feed it FGM and learn the rifle, I bet you will be very happy the way it is.

That group looks good, you can always try a few more to validate.

If they print as good as that, I would leave it alone. Bedding is no guarantee of accuracy, and in some cases can cause the groups to open (if you develop a pressure point) Many Remington shooters spend time and money just to get to the point you are now.

Take er out and stretch its legs.

Have fun

Ya I feel that the rifle is performing beautifully and that was my best group for the day. Was averaging .987 for the day. Only a couple groups above 1 inch so I was ecstatic. Putting rounds down range has helped my shooting more than anything else. Thanks for the input guys!

That just may be the "best" of "best men". That dude is a keeper. I'm sure she is too....

I started out with a 700p in 308.
I bedded the action in it and shot sub minute groups with reloads. I shot somewhere around 7000 rounds through it. I then switched it to a 260 after trying to seat to the lands and the bullet couldn't seat in the case. I eventually gave it to my Wife and she shoots it very well in Varmint Silhouette shoots.

You will be pleased with your rifle.

I wouldn't bed the rifle's recoil lug, but I would upgrade the stock trigger to a Timney or send the stock trigger to someone like AO or SAC to have it tuned up. Either of those options will help with trigger control and shrink your group sizes a bit more.

Ya the barreled action is still with my buddy being threaded and and the timney was the last purchase before the wedding. Now officially married so we will see how much my guns get attention haha. Thanks for the advice guys, definitely leaving the hs precision stock and going to just get my trigger time in dialing her preferred load.

There is nothing wrong with the 40X trigger that came with it.
matter of fact, if you don't want it, I'll buy it.
The 40X is a good trigger, don't have a clue as to why folks insist on changing it.

Agree, it's a very decent trigger. The only thing I would do to a bone stock 700p is chop the barrel to 22" or 24", and polish the magazine edges/feed ramp. IMO, it doesn't need 26", and a lot of them scar your ammo up when feeding. Mine shoots 168's awfully well, as in 3 in the same hole @ 100 well.

also, those SWFA fixed scopes are solid. good glass and the clicks work like theyre supposed to.

Haha, well I'm not quite doing that yet, but time should correct this. As far as the trigger goes, I felt a much lighter break with the timney than with the stock. Not to say the rifle didnt shoot well, but one of my few planned upgrades to this was trigger anyway. fdkay, if you are indeed interested, as soon as i get the action back I'm replacing it. Make me an offer, or even better trade me an extra tumbler if you have one valued about the same lying around.

Good choice (by your best man...what a friend!). You don't say how experienced you are at precision rifle, but I think it's a great platform to learn on or to keep as "your rifle". Spend more time and money shooting it than buying aftermarket stuff for it. Buy accessories to solve specific problems you encounter. By the time you have shot it out, you'll know what comes next.

Shoot the hell out of it!

is it a 40x trigger because the 700p has been coming with the x mark or x mark pro for a while now. i have had great luck with the x mark as well, but the x mark pro is on recall so make sure it is not that one.
