Remington extractor: WTF is wrong with it?

A brand new R700 in 223 takes a nice chunk off the rim of the cartridge when closing the bolt.

No way this is normal, right?

It extracts fine, but the case is chewed up.

The extractor itself seems springy enough, and the bolt face is not dirty.

What can be causing this?

Re: Remington extractor: WTF is wrong with it?

Sorry buts it's a common occurence. More of a problem with the 223's than anyother size case head size. All Remington extractors sort of claw their way over the rim as the bolt is rotated leaving an ugly looking rim. I know you shouldn't have to do this but short of replacing the extractor with a Sako style, all you can do is take a cratex cone in a Dremel tool and polish the inside of the extractor lip. This will minimize the damage.

Re: Remington extractor: WTF is wrong with it?

Thanks for the info.

The bolt is very hard to close because the extractor is taking a chunk off the brass.

I popped the extractor out and made sure there was no debris behind it. I polished it a bit with 600-grit sandpaper and popped it back in.

It helped a little, but the bolt is still hard to close - I have to slap it closed.

Re: Remington extractor: WTF is wrong with it?

I ordered a new one from brownells, dropped it in and it works like a champ. It was noticeably smaller than the factory supplied part which makes no sense since they both come from rem.

Re: Remington extractor: WTF is wrong with it?

I wouldnt be happy if a new rifle was doing that

When my remington 700 was brand new it went straight back for an ejector fix and a chamber polish as it was chewing up the hell out of new brass... and im not talking light scratches either.

Re: Remington extractor: WTF is wrong with it?

I had one like that on a .223 as well. It is easily fixed.
I would not reccomend the Sako extractor, Do a search on in here. Sako extractors fail more often than Rem.
The Rem is one of the few that has not let me down. One of my great dissapointments is that Borden uses the Sako in his otherwise great action.

Re: Remington extractor: WTF is wrong with it?

I was looking at it some more last night and discovered that the claw/wedge part of the extractor does not retract fully flush with the bolt's rim. That's the reason the brass is getting broached, in effect, by the extractor.

I am disappointed that the rifle left like that from Remington. Piss poor quality control, if you ask me. Specially since they fired a couple of rounds at the factory.

I'm sending the bolt to GAP to get the extractor replaced/tuned and the bolt handle threaded.
