Remington Misfire Problem. Anyone Else?

I picked up a early 1990's Remington 700 BDL in 243 from a family member a few weeks back. He had never fired it more than 10 times, and used it for deer hunting. I even got the old Winchester ammo box with 10 rounds left that he purchased with the rifle!

I took the rifle out this morning, and fired 30 rounds through it to break in the barrel. What I found troubled me!
<span style="font-weight: bold">
After 11 rounds the rifle began misfiring, and when I would pull the bolt to eject the round it would go off!!!!!</span>

I tried everything! I took the bolt apart and cleaned it, and even cleaned the rifle on site. The last time it happened I had a round in the chamber, and it wouldn't fire so I flipped the safety and <span style="font-weight: bold">it WENT OFF</span>!

Anyone else have these problems throughout the years?

The trigger is suspect. Pull it out and replace it with a known good working order trigger. Most likely this will solve the issue.

I had a Rem 700 once that had similar problem, when I replaced the trigger, the problem was solved.

Re: Remington Misfire Problem. Anyone Else?

No one messed with the trigger. It is a factory trigger. The relative that I bought it from didn't mess with anything on the rifle.

After looking over the internet for other people with the same issue I found it to be a 'hush hush' serious issue reported by other Remington 700 owners.

Here is an example. http://www.cnbc.com/id/39554936/

It appears that Remington has attempted to quell many outcries to correct the issue, but nothing has been done!

This is exactly the same problem that my Dad has with his 700. It went off so many times that way, taking the safety off and opening the bolt, that it was really scary. He finally gave the rifle to his gunsmith and he never went and picked it up.

My Dad bought a Stevens .270 and never had any issues with it.

Who is the Gunsmith, and what is his number. I will gladly go pick up the rifle

Rooster,

Why don't you just have a competent gunsmith install a good, known working trigger in it, since this clearly has you rattled.

If that does not resolve your problem with it, then resort to other measures.

If you do not wish to try a different trigger, I would be interested in buying it "as is".

Let me know if you want to sell it.

I think I'll just get an X-Mark trigger and be done with it. The gun is in like new condition, and I really like it. Since the trigger and safety are the issue I will replace them.

+1 to Spartan. Plenty of issues with the Xmark series. May I suggest a Rifle Basix? They are inexpensive and have a solid reputation.

Re: Remington Misfire Problem. Anyone Else?

I have a sneaky suspicion it's just gummed up somewhere from getting oiled and left for years or rusted up for the same reason. I'd be willing to bet if you took the barreled action out of the stock, sprayed it down with some kind of penetrating oil, manipulated the moving parts until they're free and then put it back together, it would be fine. If you don't want to chance it I'd be willing to take it off your hands... LOL!

Re: Remington Misfire Problem. Anyone Else?

You could send it back to Remington. They would probably take care of it. I would say it is trigger related. Or you could send it to cNBC so they can run another story.

I would remove the trigger and clean it. Then function check the gun WITH OUT ammo. Look for gunk or old oil in there. Any rust on the trigger would be bad. If it failed while function testing it, you should send it back to Remington or a gun smith.
