What does the hide think of the Remington Target Tactical?

I've had my eye on one for a while. My ideal rifle would be a GAP Hospitaller, but I don't have 4k+ to spend... The Target Tactical seems to be the closest thing off the shelf, and at a decent price point for how it's configured, around $1500. The only two detractors for me are...

1 - The twist rate, 1/11.25, I'd prefer a 1/10, but it's not really a big deal.
2 - I wish it came with detachable bottom metal.

Other than that it seems like one of the better out of the box shooters on the market. I've heard form guys who own them that they exceptionally accurate, but I'm not sure what their standards are. I'm getting .5 MOA accuracy out of my SPR, so that's what I consider accurate; that being said, my SPR is a no compromise build, and the Remington in question is a factory gun, so I won't have as high of expectations. This will be my first .308 bolt gun (though I'm not new to bolt action), so I'm not worried about needing a better/more accurate rifle for a while.

Right now my .308 is a Kel-Tek RFB, but I'm not loving it. Not because there is anything wrong with it, I just don't derive much enjoyment from shooting it. It's a really interesting gun, and I find the forward ejecting mechanism highly amusing as it will throw 3-5 shells at once, but that's hardly a good reason to own something. It's really a CQB rifle, which is a polite way of saying it's a bullet sprayer, and it just doesn't make sense to shoot .308 fast. I get a lot more enjoyment from actually hitting targets, small ones that are far away... So anyway, now you know all that unnecessary back story, here is what I'm incline to do. Sell the RFB, and use the money to finance the build of an accurate .308 AR, or buy a Remington Target Tactical.

I'd like to get input form anyone who has first hand experience with the Target Tactical. Is it worth the money, does it shoot well, would you recommend it? If I get a bolt action I'm set on getting a Remington 700; I'm going to be on a team who is doing some consulting work for them, and for the sake of kissing up to the client, it's not bad to own one of their firearms... Anyway, my plan is to just throw a fixed power scope on it and call it a day. I just want something accurate that won't cause me any headaches or bankruptcy. If you were going to spend $1500, would you go with the Target Tactical? If not, elaborate....

Re: Remington Target Tactical......Go or no-go?

No first hand experience but everything ive heard about those vtr barrels has been bad. I was thinking about this rifle and decided against it. I would buy a rifle with a regular heavy barrel and put that b&c stock on it. JMHO

Re: Remington Target Tactical......Go or no-go?

I really like my target tactical. The 11 1/4 twist does fine with 175 SMKs. The 5r rifleing is what really drew me to it. Great stock. I wouldn't hesitate to buy it again.

Edit to say
Shoots 1/2 MOA at 100yds. Can hold 1 MOA if I do my part at 1000. It is a shooter

Re: Remington Target Tactical......Go or no-go?

I don't think it offers anything else than a Remington 5R, just a different shape. The barrel can't be any better than a round 5R tube, if anything it would be worse because it would loose rigidity when cut triangular. If it were me I would get a regular 5R model and stick it in a Mcmillan or Manners.

Yea... The triangular fluting puts me off, I guess I should have listed that as one of my hesitations.

I just want something easy though. Put a scope on it and go shooting... I just know by the time I'm done with a regular 5R I'll have 2k into it.

Re: Remington Target Tactical......Go or no-go?

I am very skeptical of the triangle barrel. I'm wondering if you could call Remington and ask them to build you one with heavy or Sendero contoured barrel. Savage built me a left handed version of a rifle that was only offer in right hand. It was $200 extra.

Re: Remington Target Tactical......Go or no-go?

I dont like the barrel, for me it would be hard to grab with my lathe, it would be hard to thread for a can.

I like remmingtons, that said all of them except the M24 I buy expecting to rework and rebarrel to something better at a later point.

If this is your first bolt gun, I think there is alot of value in a savage.

Otherwise, the other side of the coin is saving your coin for a AI, which long term can be a good investment for some folks.

Re: Remington Target Tactical......Go or no-go?

Definately a NO-GO!

Chamber throat is WAY too long. Triangular barrel changes point of impact every few shots. I worked and worked on it for over a year and finally cut the barrel off and rebarreled it with a Mcree Precision Rem-Age kit in .260 Rem. Now it shoots!

Way too much money for something that may or may not shoot. IMO you would be better off just getting a Mil-spec 5R.
They do pretty well for a lot less money. As for me... I will only be picking up a Remington for the action and building it up from there. Much more accurate and a lot less hassle.

What search?
Buy the regular 5R for $500 cheaper, sell the hs stock for $200, and now you have $700 for a stock of your choice.

If you bought the adjustable b&c stock, you'd come out ahead. Buy the adjustable HS tactical and come out ahead.

Or, pony up just a little more and buy a mcree or xlr chassis
