I have a fairly new Remington VTR in .308 Just used for deer hunting for the last 2 years. Might have 150 rounds through it. I know the stock is too flexible.

If I get the McMillan A5 and let them bed it, with the right ammo, could this 22" 1-12 twist barrel have the legs to hit 1000 yards?

Planning to put a Vortex Viper PST 6-24x50 FFP on it.

Re: Remington VTR

Perhaps with the heavier factory match ammo and a good stock.

My VTR after grinding the cheep factory stock enough to free float the barrel and with match ammo can hold within a little less than 1 MOA at 100 yds. I have not fired match ammo other than several rounds to see if the VTR would do a reasonable job.

Re: Remington VTR

I am assuming it is a standard 700 action? I can swap the barrel out later, if I am not satisfied, I suppose. Get a 26" or so from Kreiger most likely. Would just rather not spend the cash on the barrel if I can get reasonable accuracy out of it. I need to find a range with more than 300 yard berms that is reasonably close to me. That is the farthest I have ever shot with any rifle, so I am very new to this. And, unfortunately, unless I hit the mega millions tonight, I don't have the slush fund to buy the really hi end toys. Chey-tac, barrett. Man, if I had an extra 30k or so to play with, the rifle I would build...

Re: Remington VTR

A call to one of the stock makers should tell if the action would fit. The same for the barrel maker.

I am told that the 175 gr Sierra Match King bullet should "reach out and touch" at 1000 yards but have never fired that in my Sendero. I would not think the different length of the barrel would give much less velocity. Check one of the ballistic programs to see if the bullet will not slow to the trans-sonic range.

As to accuracy, a rifle shooting 1 MOA groups or less at 100 yards should shoot 1 MOA groups at longer ranges but remember that 1 MOA at 100 yards is nearly 1 inch, at 200 is 2 inch, at 300 is 3 inch, etc.

I should think you will get a good idea of the rifle's accuracy using the range you have available.

One word of caution though, I am not an expert so my thoughts should be perhaps, taken with a grain of salt!

Re: Remington VTR

Well, I am a hard person to pin down. I decided to start over with an inherently more accurate platform. I swapped even.
I swapped my VTR and the Zeiss Conquest 6.5X20X50 scope on it for a brand new Remington 5R in 300 Win Mag yesterday.

Now, I just need to save my pennies and decide....

IOR FFP, or Leupold FFP, or wait until the Vortex PST FFP is out. Or save even more pennies and get the night force FFP. I really like the FFP scopes

Re: Remington VTR

What I would suggest is that a linear projection of MOA accuracy across the yardages may be somewhat optimistic.

Collective wisdom may suggest that a 1/2MOA-1MOA rifle at 100yd becomes more like a 1MOA-2MOA rifle at 1000yd. Cumulative small uncertainty and deflection factors tend to increase overall with the distances.

Re: Remington VTR

I have a remington vtr. I swapped out the stock for a bell and carlson medalist. Then put a jewell hvr trigger on it. With the 175 matchkings I had no problem reaching out to the 1000 mark on some silhouette ranges (off a concrete bench with rests). I was in the .5 MOA range at 100 and out at 1000 on calm days it performed very well.
