Gunsmithing Removing a stuck 10/22 barrel.

Hey, im needing some help.

I recently purchased a ruger charger, for my suppressed pistol/rifle platform

However, i cant get the damn barrel out of the action.

I've used cooling and heating (butane torch, and a can of dust-off used upside down)
I've tried brute force
I've smacked the hell out of it against my bench
I've taken whacks at it out of frustration
I've attempted to burn the shitty powder coating off of the receiver near the barrel


What the hell ruger, are you welding your barrels in place now?


Anyway, does anyone have any techniques to pull a barrel from a 10/22 action

throw it in the freezer overnight, pull it out and vice up the barrel and warm up the receiver, the aluminum will expand much faster and just may give you the advantage.

that or take a 2x4 and turn it sidewise in the receiver then whack the crap out of it with a hammer

This is one case I'd seek out a pro gunsmith rather than trash the receiver.

its not threaded is it?? id tap it, the barrel, from the inside with something metal (bar stock) laid against the barrel breech and with the barrel between two blocks loosely so the receiver is stopping against the wood blocks. then place the bar stock across the breech, or chamber and tap it out so all force is on the barrel and the receiver is stopped on the wood. make sense? not clamped, just up against the blocks or the stopper. the barrel in the blocks, receiver stopped by the wood.

In the past, I have gotten Ruger barrels out by letting the bolt slam home against the barrel 20-30 times. The barrel should slowly walk its way out of the receiver.

Uh, you took out the screws and v-block, right?
I've been known to hold the barrel in my weak hand and wallop the v-block lug with a plastic mallet.
Should be especially effective after chill/heat as above, OVER CARPET.

If it were me:

Regardless of how its attached its obviously either stuck, seized, or exceeding the owner's ability to remove it. Not picking on you just saying you may lack the tools.

When I get a barrel that's "stuck" I chop off the barrel right in front of the tennon and then stick it in the lathe/mill and machine out the tennon till I can remove the last bit of threads or peel the cylinder portion of the barrel.

Either way, your assured that your action isn't going to be twisted, warped, cracked, or damaged.

+1 on the above! I recently went through the same thing on a 10/22 with a VQ barrel. They are cut to be a really REALLY tight fit. I did the same thing, held the bbl in my weak hand and took to the vblock portion of the receiver with a plastic dead blow mallet. After many attempts and a now chewed up mallet it finally came loose!

soak it with PBblaster or similar too while your at it. i hear these guys with hitting the V block deal, but your pounding aluminum. i would feel better hitting the steel barrel to smack it out of the receiver than smacking the receiver. maybe drill a hole in a 2x4 and put the barrel in it and whack the barrel while the receiver rests against the wood. does that make sense? put the hammer head inside the receiver and tap the barrel face

Had the same problem about a year ago.
Head to the hardware store, pick up some 1/4" threaded stock, a standard nut and a deep nut.



Taper threaded stock to fit inside bore, snug standard nut to barrel face and use deep nut to push out from inside rear of receiver.

A couple of turns on the deep nut and the barrel should pop right out!

Axeman, a plastic hammer is still softer than the aluminum receiver. Yeah, some caution is a good idea.

On another note, I used to be annoyed by your hot avatars; now that they're gone, I miss them.

how much will a smith charge to do it?

seems to be alot of work and alot of room to severely damage it. i'd rather just suck it up and take it to the smith. plus if he f's it up, you might get another charger out of it.

Agree with the plastic mallet not being much of an issue to the aluminum receiver. Plus in my case the barrel was a carbon fiber tension sleeved barrel. Really not wanting to pound on that to much!
